US SAILING's Olympic Development Regatta
Sail Newport, Fort Adams
State Park, Newport, RI
6/17/03 to 6/21
Too old for the Youths
and JO's?
The US SAILING Youth and Olympic Committees have
teamed up to initiate a new event targeted at your age group. The
inaugural Olympic Development Regatta will be held June 17-21, 2003 at
Sail Newport in Newport, RI.
Mistral IMCO, Europe, Finn, 470, Tornado, 49er and Ynglings are invited to
compete. The event is open to US and Canadian sailors born in the
years 1978-1984.
Olympic coaches Skip Whyte, Luther Carpenter, and Gary Bodie will be there
to coach, along with various class experts. The format is three days
of training followed by two days of racing, although the emphasis is on
the introduction to the Olympic Classes and the racing is secondary.
This is a regatta for responsible young adults. You must arrange
your own boat, crew, housing, transportation and meals. The various
class officers and the class representatives to the US SAILING Olympic
Committee will attempt to help you find charter boats, but no guarantees.
Also, the Sail Newport Ynglings are available for charter.
We anticipate relatively small fleets, but we are committed to making this
event happen. Small fleets just means more personal attention and
individual coaching. If you have ever thought about checking out
some of the Olympic Classes and making the next step to International
competition, this is your opportunity to get started.
Questions?? Please read the NOR first, but James Appel is available
to answer questions at appel@attglobal.net. The Class contacts are
available online at US SAILING, link to Olympics, and then OSC 2000-2004
or Olympic Classes.
