Youth Champs 2016 – Day 3 Notes

Monday’s Racing Notes:

Day 3 of the 2016 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship was pivotal for the five fleets in action on San Diego Bay. The 2016 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships, hosted by Coronado Yacht Club with support from the San Diego Yacht, features young sailors racing in the Laser, Laser Radial, International 420, 29er and Techno 293 fleets. Tuesday marks the grand finale to this year’s championship and US Sailing Youth World Team qualification on the line.

Racing Conditions

Sailors raced in lighter conditions on Monday: 7-10 knots, S/SW, shifty.

Lasers (singlehanded dinghy)
After gaining ground on Marshall McCann at the conclusion of Sunday’s racing, brother Ford won the first four races of the day (five straight, six wins total) to take an 18 point lead through 12 races.

Radial (singlehanded dinghy)
Following five more closely contested races, Carrson Pearce has a 12 point lead over Leon Boucher. Talia Toland held ground in the girls division and leads by 15 over Sophia Reineke.

Techno 293 (windsurfer)
Steven Cramer won all three races today (six straight) in the windsurfing division. Cramer leads Geronimo Nores through nine races by four points.

I-420 (doublehanded dinghy)
Wiley Rogers and Jack Parkin have a commanding lead. The duo has seven wins in 11 races. The team of Kathryn Hall and Ashton Borcherding pulled into second place overall following another great day on the water. They placed third in Race 8 and second in Race 11.

29er (doublehanded skiff)
Ryan Ratliffe and Sam Merson jumped into first place following a stellar day (1-2-1-[3]). Neil Marcellini and Ian Brill are just five points back. Louisa Nordstrom and Catherine Mollerus also had a tremendous day to pull into third place overall.

* The Laser Radial, International 420, and 29er will be vying for a spot on the US Sailing Youth World Team and compete at the 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand on December 14-20.
