Minutes

Introductions
Participant introductions were made around the table and room.

Junior Women’s Championships
Stephanie McLennan reported on the Junior Women’s Events. The 2004 regattas went well and plans for the 2005 regatta are on schedule. The 2005 regatta will be the 10th anniversary for the Junior Women’s Double-Handed Championship.

Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship
Sandy Grosvenor reported planning for the 2005 event is on schedule and going well.

Grade 4 Women’s Match Race Events
Sundance 2005 had some last minute competitor withdrawals, but was a great event.
Rolex Match was reported to fully subscribed.

US Women’s Match Racing Championship
The 2005 event will be held at Ft. Worth Boat Club. Debi Schoenherr will serve as Chief Umpire. NOR and Conditions are on-line.
Bayview Yacht Club’s bid to host the 2007 event was discussed. Ultimate 20s are very even boats. A motion was made and seconded to accept the Bayview Yacht Club bid. Motion passed.

ISAF
Janet Baxter, a member of the ISAF Women’s Committee, reported they won’t meet until November 2005. There are 20 (16 men and 6 women) US SAILING delegates on ISAF committees. The ISAF Women’s Forum is open to any women on ISAF committees. Janet will become moderator of the Forum at the end of April.

Olympic Sailing Committee
Dean Brenner reported the OSC has big challenges. In the near term they will be focusing on fundraising.

Women’s International Match Racing Association
Susie is updating the website.
A US only list server for women’s match racing was discussed.

Nations’ Cup
Barbara Farquhar reported on ISAF’s current plans for the Nations Cup. MNA qualifiers will be held in 2005. Regional qualifiers will be held in 2006. A motion was made and seconded to use the USWMRC as our MNA qualifier. The motion passed.

National Women’s Sailing Association
Joan Thayer reported on NWSA projects, programs and activities. See attached report.

Terms of Reference
Chair Charlie Arms reviewed the committee’s terms of reference.
There was discussion about the possibility of adding college and high school representatives to the committee.

Mayor’s Cup
Barbara Farquhar reported on the Mayor’s Cup, a grade 2 women’s match racing regatta. It will be held in Catalina 37s with a crew of seven women. Dates are July 14 – 16, 2005. Contact Camille Danials (CamilleDanials@horizon.net) for more details.

REPORT to the WOMEN'S SAILING COMMITTEE of US SAILING

April 1, 2005

Completed events

October 23, 2004 "Get Together" at the Rose City YC; an evening for women sailors co-sponsored with the Oregon Women's Sailing Association. A very successful networking event.

February 4, 2005 -16th Annual Women's Sailing Convention (not NWSA) - Corona del Mar, CA. A sell-out event for 350 women.

Upcoming events

Cruise - Australia July 30 - August in the Whitsundays under the leadership of Capt. Leslie Steinkoenig, of San Diego, CA.

June 4 - 4th Women's Sailing Conference at the Corinthian Y.C. Marblehead, MA Speaker: Nancy Erley, the "Offshore Professor". 150 women expected.

July 1-8 Instructional week in the San Juan Islands for NWSA members at Tethys Offshore Sailing for Women with Nancy Erley.

AdventureSail® programs

          June 18 - Courageous Sailing Center,
                        Boston, MA

          July 9 - Breakwater Yacht Club,
                     The Hamptons, NY

August Filling berths in a week long schooner camp in Salem, MA on the schooner FAME. Currently 4 girls at Girls Inc., Lynn, MA.

Work in progress

A celestial navigation event on a schooner in August.

Finalizing two other AdventureSail® programs in upstate New York and a new area in Massachusetts.

Continue identifying new sites and partnerships for AdventureSail® programs.

Other

President Diana Smith resigned from the board to take a position with Offshore Sailing School in Ft. Myers, FL.

Vice President Val Cook assumed the presidency on an interim basis.

Dr. Julie Teetsov of Menands, NY, joined the board of directors in October. Julie has done extensive cruising in the United States and in the US and British Virgin Islands. A J-24 competitor, Julie volunteers with the Y-Knot sailing program for disabled sailors on Lake George in NY's Adirondack State Park. She has a fondness for classic yachts and interest in the art of celestial navigation. Julie has a Ph.D. in chemistry and is a research scientist at GE's Global Research Center in Albany, NY.

NWSA continues to be identified as a source of information and guidance for women sailors.

NWSA is 100% volunteer driven. Membership is solid. The organization is financially in the black. NWSA continues to operate in a cost-effective mode.
