the Chief Judge will be from outside the United States. The Notice of Race is on
the web at www.ussailing.org/riwkc.
Chartered boats are available. The winning skipper will receive a Rolex watch.
ISAF Report
Barbara Farquhar gave a brief report. Chairman Epstein
reported that the interest among women in Match Racing events in the United
States continues to be strong. Several events received more than enough entries
to fill their ranks. See attached Board Action Item.**
Olympic Report
The chairman reported that grants were given to three women's
teams to develop a campaign for the Olympics in Ynglings. Vicki Sodaro pointed
out that the teams represent various parts of the U.S. There was discussion on
where Yngling fleets are located and the costs associated with pursuing an
Olympic campaign.
Old Business
Nina Koehler is the Web Site Liaison.
New Business
Outreach to grass roots. The chairman presented the following
proposal for consideration:
That a US SAILING Women’s Network be organized to
improve access, attitudes and communications, as relates to women and girls in
sailing, especially those women and girls who are club racers and recreational
sailors. The network should not be at the exclusion of those elite and highly
competitive sailors already under the aegis of the Women’s Sailing Committee.
A working party of Faye Bennet, Joan Thayer and Betsy Beddow
was appointed to research this subject and report back at the Fall Meeting. The
proposal is a step towards satisfying the compliance requirements of ISAF, the
Olympics, etc. The WSC is investigating the possibility of the National Women's
Sailing Association (NWSA) participating with US SAILING and becoming part of
this proposal.
Respectfully Submitted
Susan Epstein, Chair
Women’s Sailing Committee
** As provided (orally) in the Women’s Sailing Committee Report to the
Board of Directors:
The Action Item submitted to the Board was moot, as the ISAF Council had
already voted to not reconsider the issue of the women’s keelboat event at the
2004 Olympics. No Board action was taken.

Title : |
Reconsideration of ISAF Decision |
Whereas
ISAF voted in 1999 to include a Women’s Match Racing event for the 2004
Olympics
Women worldwide, their National Authorities and Sponsors committed time
and money to develop women’s match racing
In the United States, we had sponsors for 10 Women’s Match Racing
Events per year and that sponsorship was withdrawn after the ISAF’S
decision to change to Fleet Racing
US SAILING changed its women’s open championships from fleet racing to
match racing
It is estimated that it will cost $200K/per year to mount an Olympic
Fleet Racing Campaign as opposed to $75K/per year to support an Olympic
Match Racing Campaign
RESOLVED:
US SAILING Board of Directors direct the US SAILING delegation to ISAF to
support reconsideration of the November 2000 vote to change the Women’s
Keelboat Event for 2004 from fleet racing to match racing.
