Introduction

As the Web Site Liaison for your council or committee, you will be posting information on your council’s or committee’s web page that exists within the US SAILING Web Site. Keep in mind that the world will be able to view what you post. Therefore, you must exercise good judgment and discretion with regard to what you put up and how you present it. In effect you will be representing US SAILING to the outside world as well as to members of US SAILING and your council or committee. We have prepared the following general guidelines to help you.

Guidelines

  • DO’S

·         Create content that will be useful, informative, and helpful. You could post your council or committee’s mission, organization & members, summaries of actions or activities, relevant databases (check with Aaron Kiselka first about this), new developments of interest, meeting minutes & agendas, or key contacts for different parts of your organization.

·         Post any official notices (Entry Forms, Notice of Race, Conditions, Releases) only on the US SAILING webpage.  As the organization authority of the championship, this site alone is responsible for maintaining this information.  If you wish to link to the information on your webpage, that’s fine.

·         Post information about accommodations, directions to your site, nearest airport, etc. on your site.

·         Have your council or committee chair review the material before you post it.

·         Put up factual information.

·         Try to make it interesting, both in content and graphics if possible.

·         Limit your page to your council’s or committee’s business and area of interest.

·         Proof read your information for clarity, grammar, and spelling.

·         Use good taste.

·         Make the presentation of your materials concise.

·         Keep your material current. It is useful to link directly to the US SAILING site where the information is refreshed as soon as it becomes available.  For instance, time of meetings held during the Annual and Spring US SAILING Meetings will change as the schedule gets adjusted. Either refer to the general schedule or check daily to be sure that your information is accurate.

·         Make sure that US SAILING is always spelled correctly.

·         Refer to the championship first, then the trophy – e.g. U.S. Multihull Championship for the Hobie Alter Cup.

  • DON’T

·         Post information that is copyrighted, either by US SAILING or another entity or person. If you are in doubt, check on it first.

·         Make any personal comments about people.

·         Say anything you think is counter to US SAILING’S policies. If you have any questions about this, contact your Chairperson.

·         Post anything that is proprietary. US SAILING’S proprietary information is listed in its "Proprietary List" (See Regulation 7.06) If you are in doubt, check on it before posting it.

·         Post anything that is confidential.

·         Give prices for US SAILING products or services without verifying the information with your council or committee’s staff liaison.

·         Post information contained in press releases. These will be found in another section of the US SAILING website.

·         Say anything that would embarrass anyone inside or outside of US SAILING.

·         Endorse specific products.

OFF SITE LINKS
You may establish off site links from your web pages to other web sites that provide useful sailing content and information. Committees and Chairs are responsible for all content on their sites so if you intend to include external links, you should inform your committee or council chairs and the Web Master. You should use due diligence when deciding to link to an external site that is commercial. If the site primarily promotes its owners products or service and provides little general interest content - it would not be appropriate. A site that provides some useful content along with a commercial message, if it conflicts with any existing marketing agreement US SAILING may have, may also not be appropriate. Banners, logos or any linking object that conveys more than just the name of the site being linked to may not be used.

If the Web Master finds any potential conflicts with US SAILING'S policies, he is required to notify the Web Working Party Chair and staff and you may be asked to remove the problem links.

All off site links should come up in a new browser window. Any page you create with a list of links should include a disclaimer that US SAILING is not responsible for any of the content on any of the linked to sites, nor does a site's inclusion constitute an endorsement of any kind.

You will have the opportunity to set up a page with limited access where your council or committee can have a dialog. In this case, you and your organization will have more latitude as to what is said. However, most of the Do’s and Don’t still apply.
