NSPS News 2009 Recap In January 2009, nearly 200 sailing program directors, instructors, school owners, industry experts and others gathered in San Diego, Calif. for US SAILING’s National Sailing Program Symposium presented by LaserPerformance. Celebrity keynote speakers joined informative presenters and industry leading manufacturer representatives to form the best NSPS yet. The symposium consisted of four packed days of workshops, panels, networking opportunities, sailing and powerboating demos, award presentations, announcements and other events. Keynote speakers included Stan Honey, Robbie Haines, Dean Brenner, Anna Tunnicliffe and Craig Leweck. Dave Perry put on a first class rules seminar to support his book “Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing” issued this year by US SAILING, and is valid through 2012. There was time for fun, socializing and opportunities to network as well. LaserPerformance and Mt. Gay Rum hosted a cocktail party at the Coronado Community Center. Diane Wenzel – US SAILING’s new Community Sailing Council Chair A new Community Sailing Council Chairperson was also named at NSPS. Diane Wenzel, director of Westwind Sailing and former Community Sailing Council Vice-Chair, was elected to the position. Wenzel served as the secretary for US Sailing’s Community Sailing Council in 2006, followed by two years as vice-chair. She is a US SAILING level one instructor trainer, US SAILING Powerboat Instructor, American Red Cross CPR and First Aid instructor, International Kiteboard Organization certified level two instructor and U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain. She also teaches Marine Science and Technology at Saddleback Community College, located in Orange County, Calif. Wenzel has been a significant contributor to the sailing community for the last 22 years. She has introduced people of all ages to the sport through her Orange County based company, Westwind Sailing. Her goal has been to provide public access to high quality, safe and affordable sailing programs. Wenzel plans to create a network of community sailing programs within US SAILING. “Sailing can be enjoyed by young children, senior citizens, people with disabilities and, despite its stereotype as a rich person’s sport, people of limited financial means,” Wenzel said. “It promotes self esteem, teamwork, and environmental awareness.”
