Meagan Johnson

If you think you have heard all there is to hear about the four different generations in the workplace, you have not heard Meagan’s spin on how to attract, train, market and retain people from every generation – and not strangle someone in the process. You get to laugh while acquiring tools you can use immediately to improve your multi-generational relationships with clients, customers and co-workers.

FACT: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by year 2008, 22 million people will have left the labor force to retire. Who do you have to replace them? Having a cohesive, multi-generational workforce is vital to survival.

FACT: Nearly 80% of all junior and senior high school teens work part-time while going to school. Teens, because of their inexperience, are also more likely to have injuries or accidents in the workplace. Not understanding how to train an emerging workforce can be costly.

FACT: The 'New Millennium Generation' is the first generation to grow up with a computer in their home. Almost 90% of 12-17 year olds use the Internet. They use the Internet as more than just a fact-finding instrument, they use it to communicate and to socialize. Are you using archaic, outdated tools to reach this generation?

Audience members will learn how to:

                 •     Enhance their credibility to those of different generations

•     Identify and understand the differences between generations; it's more than body piercings and                         hair dye

•     Vary your approach to multi-generational employees and clients

•     Learn how a person's 'generational signposts' affect what he or she says, does and buys                  •     Use terminology that will bridge the gap between you and people of different generations                  •     Offend people of every generation so they'll never want to deal with you again (some 'what NOT                        to do's')

Each generation has very unique wants, needs and desires. With each generation, there is an opportunity to learn new perspectives and get fresh ideas. With each generation, there is also an opportunity to grow frustrated, upset, angry and have a disaster on your hands. You must learn to tap into each generation's motivational requirements in order to realize their greatest potential.

Dawn Riley

She is Past President of the Women’s Sports Foundation (www.womenssportsfoundation.org ) and CEO of the America True Foundation.  She has recently returned from Spain where she was the General Manager of the French America’s Cup Team, AREVA Challenge and has settled back in the Midwest where she continues her efforts to make sailing more accessible through advocacy and  education.  She is touring the country’s yacht clubs supported by ClearPoint Weather and in her spare time is dabbling in politics.

Axel Grael

Axel Grael, 49, is a sailor from the Rio Yacht Club, has a University degree in Forestry (UFRuRJ - Rio de Janeiro) and a professional career covering the public sector, business and non-profit activities. Started a PhD in Geography (UFRJ – Rio de Janeiro), an activity not concluded yet.

Presently, he is the president of Feema (the state of Rio de Janeiro environmental protection agency), a position he also held before, from 1999-2002.  He is the former undersecretary for the Environment (2001-2002) of the Rio de Janeiro State Government and the former chairman of IEF (the forest and parks administration: 1991-1994). He was also the coordinator the Jacarepaguá Basin Environmental Recovery Project (1997-1999), a program sponsored by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and held other government positions.

Parallel to his government career he was an active social and environmental entrepreneur, leading non-for-profit community organizations since 1979, when he founded together with a group of sailors, a pioneer environment organization in his home city (Niterói) to protect and clean up the Guanabara Bay.In 1998, Grael helped to develop a sailing program that became known as “The Grael Project” (www.projetograel.org.br), a non-for-profit organization started by a group of sailors leaded by Axel’s two brothers:

Torben Grael: 5 Olympic medals (2 gold: Atlanta and Athens, 1 silver, 2 bronze), 5 world titles and              skipper of the BRAZIL 1, the Brazilian boat taking part of the next VOR Round the World Race,              starting October.

Lars Grael: 2 Olympic medals (2 bronze), 1 world title and presently he is the Secretary of Youth,              Sports and Leisure of the Government of State of São Paulo.

The Grael Project is an educational program designed around sailing, dedicated to public school students in an after school time basis. Besides sport initiation, participants have profession skills training to the nautical market (fiber-glass techniques, woodwork, electronics, mechanics and nautical sewing: sail and canvas). Other educational programs are offered such as environment, geography, cartography, meteorology and other sciences. The Grael Project has benefited more than 5.000 students, the great majority are from low-income families. The program won awards and recognition from UNICEF, UNESCO and ISAF (Connect to Sailing Program). In 2005, the Grael Project won the Best Sailing Program of the Year, awarded by the ISS - International Sailing Summit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 2006, Axel Grael was recognized with the Award of Achievement by the Maryland-Rio de Janeiro Sister State Program, from the Office of the Secretary of State of Maryland.
