Sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats
Portsmouth, R.I.
(February 26, 2004) – Nearly 200
program directors, sailing
instructors, and coaches were in
Oakland, Calif., Jan. 28 through Feb.
1 to attend US SAILING’s National
Sailing Programs Symposium sponsored
by Vanguard Sailboats. Nearly half of
the participants attended the annual
event for the first time. US SAILING
organizes the event every year to
encourage people involved in any type
of sailing program to share ideas and
learn more about sailing programs and
instruction through seminars,
meetings, and networking.
The five days at the Symposium were
filled with educational seminars,
hands-on sailing activities, and a
surprise visit from famous actor and
avid sailor John Amos. Sessions
covered a wide range of topics,
including promoting sailing at a grass
roots level, fundraising for a sailing
program, coaching youth racers, and
much more. OCSC sailing school in
Berkeley, Calif., opened its doors for
a tour of the facilities, outdoor
demonstrations, sailing, and a
cookout.
The Symposium offers a unique
opportunity to give awards to US
SAILING volunteers who are committed
to sailing programs and education
throughout the year. The Marty Luray
Award, named for journalist Marty
Luray who was a courageous promoter of
public access sailing, was given to
Howard Haines of the Lake Thunderbird
Educational Foundation in Norman, OK,
for making great strides in furthering
public access to sailing programs. The
Captain Joe Prosser Award for
excellence in sailing instruction was
awarded the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing
Program and presented to Commander
Gerard Vandenberg. And the Sail
Training Service and Support Award in
honor of Virginia Long was awarded to
Art Stevens, a long-time US SAILING
volunteer and regional training
coordinator from El Segundo, CA.
Next year’s National Sailing Programs
Symposium will be held in Miami, FL,
with exact dates to be determined.
After nearly 20 years as successful
agenda coordinator for the event, Joni
Palmer, US SAILING Vice President, is
stepping down. The agenda for the 2005
Symposium will be coordinated by Nan
Walker of Arnold, Maryland.
For those who were not able to make it
to the Symposium and are interested in
catching up on everything they missed,
US SAILING is offering the binder
containing handouts distributed at
seminars. The book is available for
$50 by e-mailing
nsps@ussailing.org.

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On
Friday, January 30, Peter Douglas and the
California Coastal Commission
were honored by the United States Sailing
Association. The award was presented to Mr.
Douglas by US SAILING President Janet
Baxter. The recognition plaque from US
SAILING thanks "Peter Douglas and the
California Coastal Commission's 31 years of
outstanding public service; preserving California's
coastline, providing public access to
California's waterways, developing marine
environmental education and supporting
community sailing". Peter Douglas
co-authored Proposition 20, the California
Coastal Initiative passed by voters in 1972.
From its inception, Peter has had a guiding
hand in the Commission. In 1985 Peter was
named the Commission's Executive Director.
US
SAILING's annual National Sailing Programs
Symposium was held in Oakland, California
at the downtown Marriott hotel. The
Symposium ran January 27 - February
1. The Symposium attracted over 200
community and instructional program from all
over the nation.
The
recognition award was presented at an
outdoor event at the OCSC Sailing
Center in Berkeley, California. The 200
participants gathered for an
afternoon of workshops and an evening of
socializing. The crowd of sailors from
across the United States warmly welcomed and
thanked Douglas for his
work at the California Coastal Commission.
"When
more people get on the water we get more
stewards to save the coast and ocean - a job
that is never finished, but always is being
done," commented Peter Douglas.
"Peter
and the California Coastal Commission have
done a magnificent job preserving access to
the state's coast," said US SAILING
President Janet Baxter. "Its exciting
that the Commission supports community
sailing programs as another form of coastal
access. The first milestone generated
substantial support for the Fairwind Yacht
Club, a community sailing program in Marina
del Rey.
We look forward to working with the
Commission to spread our programs up and
down the California coast".
"The
California Coastal Commission set a high
standard for other states to follow,"
commented James Muldoon, US SAILING Training
Committee Chair. "Peter's vision to
protect the coast, improve water quality and
expand community sailing programs is
dynamic. I am thrilled to spread the good
news from California."
"Peter
Douglas is a trusted and valuable friend to
community sailing programs", said
Fairwind Yacht Club Fleet Captain David
Lumian. "The free slips that the
California Coastal Commission helped us
obtain saved our sailing club from
extinction. I am excited at the prospect of
expanding affordable access sailing to more
people, especially 'at risk' children".
"Peter
Douglas deserves our recognition and our
praise," remarked Rich Jepsen, OCSC
Sailing School co-owner which has its own
aggressive environmental protection program.
"We can clearly see what a difference
his work at the Commission has made here in
the Bay Area. I am delighted to have Peter
speak to this terrific gathering of
community sailing programs here at OCSC
Sailing School".
For
more information please contact David Lumian
at 310 306 1116.
