Resources for Sailing Programs & Instructors

Part of US SAILING's mission is to encourage participation in the sport of sailing. To that end, we strive to provide resources to help you run efficient, high-quality sailing programs of all kinds. Most of the programs and services listed here are provided for member organizations only.
  • Standards, curriculum, support....
    We provide standards, instructor training and course materials for small boat and multihull sailing, keelboat sailing, windsurfing, and powerboat training.

  • National Sailing Programs Symposium
    Consider attending the next National Sailing Programs Symposium, a 3+ day conference filled with workshops, keynote speakers, product demonstrations and networking opportunities.

  • Course Calendar
    For a little extra visibility, list your courses, regattas, fundraisers, etc. in our online calendar. (Instructor courses must be posted by US SAILING staff.)

  • Community Sailing Handbook
    The Community Sailing Handbook contains information on equipment selection, staffing, program options and format, mechanics, financing, etc.

  • Community Sailing List Serv
    Subscribe to the Community Sailing List Serv to receive announcements and information from the Community Sailing Council. Just send an email to
    communitysailing-subscribe@ussailing.org. Unsubscribe information is always included on the bottom of each email.

  • Community Sailing Discussion Group
    Engage in discussion with other Community Sailing Council members at this forum.

  • Keelboat Certification
    Sailing students and customers seek out US SAILING accredited programs as the national standard for sailing instruction and certification. Charter companies recognize US SAILING certification as a fundamental requirement for qualifying as a charterer. Nationwide co-operative marketing broadens the pool of potential clients. Our national database of sailing course graduates facilitates on-going training and ease in renting and chartering boats across the country. Accreditation is open to any qualified program. Isn’t it time you considered becoming an accredited US SAILING Keelboat Sailing School?

  • Event promotion
    Promote your affiliation with US SAILING and help support the organization at the same time. Request an event promotion kit for your next boat show, conference or festival.

  • Test Question Writing Standards
    The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) has a set of rigid standards for writing multiple choice test questions.  These standards have been adopted for the writing of all US SAILING/US Powerboating multiple choice questions. See  Testing Standards.

  • Modular Program Planner
    The "MPP" is a guidebook for sailing program management, with information on program organization, staffing and curriculum development.

  • Insurance
    US SAILING endorses several insurance programs for racers, cruisers, sailboat owners, yacht clubs, sailing schools, community sailing programs and more. Comprehensive coverage for most types of programs, regatta liability, sailing school, borrowed boat, directors & officers and more. Members also have access to tools like sailing program safety manuals and loss control checklists. Insurance coverage is also included with your US SAILING Instructor certification.

  • Support Boat Program
    RIBCRAFT and US SAILING have partnered to offer the ultimate rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for US SAILING members. This program is designed to provide US SAILING members and organizations with support boats for their programs and sailing.  

  • Sailing Smart
    Sailing Smart is a national learn-to sail program. Its integrated modular sailing instruction courses introduce recreational sailing and safe boating practices to 8-13 year olds.

  • Web Hosting
    US SAILING provides free web hosting to US SAILING organizations. 

  • Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series
    The Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series is a traveling seminar that brings some of the top names in sailing to sailing organizations all over the country. Each event is followed by a cocktail party sponsored by Mount Gay Rum.
