Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Trainer Requirements
SMALL BOAT LEVEL 1 INSTRUCTOR TRAINER COURSE REQUIREMENTS
COURSE DESCRIPTION The areas covered during the four-day Instructor Trainer Course include: practical sailing skills demonstrations, communicative and interpersonal skills, team building techniques, sports psychology/physiology, development of training aids, evaluation techniques, video-tape feedback on teaching styles, lesson/program planning, record keeping, problem solving skills, marketing for the Small Boat Sailing Instructor Course and legal concerns.
COURSE GOALS PREREQUISITES FOR ENTRANCE INTO THE COURSE 1. Current Small Boat Sailing Instructor certification is required. 2. Suggested minimum age is 24 years old. Consideration will be given to younger candidates depending upon experience, training and teaching ability. 3. Instructor Trainer candidates should have at least three years teaching experience in an approved sail training program. Exceptions to this requirement may be granted if the candidate has taught three years outside the sailing environment and possesses adequate sailing experience to transfer these teaching skills to sailing. 4. A high level of sailing skills is expected. Instructor Trainer candidates should be competent in any boat in any situation. 5. Current USCG approved CPR and First aid certification (approved providers). CPR and First Aid certification are not required to take the course but are required for certification as an instructorTrainer. A state licensed EMT or M.D. whose CPR certification is renewed annually is also accepted. 6. Prerequisites also include submission of the names of two references who are familiar with the candidate's recreational activities covering sailing, teaching and general employment pertinent to becoming an Instructor Trainer. 7. Current US SAILING membership is required. 8. As a condition of maintaining your status as an Instructor Trainer, US SAILING requires that you register for a background check through the NCSI upon acceptance into the course.

ALLOTMENTS MATERIALS - These materials will be sent prior to the course: 1. Small Boat Sailing Instructor Manual 2. Teaching & Coaching Fundamentals for Sailing (TCF) 3. Start Sailing Right! (basic sailing student book) by Derrick Fries 4. Instructor Trainer Handbook 5. Review questions for Small Boat Sailing Instructor Manual, and Sailing Theory. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE REQUIRES PASSING THE FOLLOWING: 1. Sailing Skills - Practical Evaluation 2. Safety Boat Handling Skills - Practical Evaluation 3. Teaching and Communication Skills - Practical Evaluation 4. Small Boat Sailing Instructor Manual Test - Written 5. Sailing Theory Test - Written 6. Boating Basics Test - Written 7. Final Evaluation by the Master Instructor Trainers, Training Director and/or Training Committee Representative. Instructor candidates are required to attend the course in its entirety to be evaluated.
