10/23/98 LIFELINE TESTING

Ralph Naranjo, Vanderstar Chair
U.S. Naval Academy

The USNA Mechanical Engineering Department will again participate in this endeavor, and plans are underway to research pulpit/pushpit design including open bow pulpits as well as the influence of dynamic loading such as those associated with a crew member falling to leeward and impacting the lifeline system.

In addition to finite element analysis of the system components, the midshipmen research team will do actual full scale testing on the steel jig designed and developed for phase one research.  More strain gauges will be connected to independent bridge amplifiers and placed in the system to derive added detail on how loads are transferred through the network of wire and tubular stanchions.  Funding availability will control the scope of testing.
