US SAILING Spring Meeting

March 16, 2002

Colorado Springs, CO

 

1. Attendance: J. Appel, D. Brenner, L. Gleason, J. Lovell, M. Reynolds, as

guests: J. Baxter, S. Epstein, H. Elliot, F. Hagedorn, J. Letherman, J. Ross.

2. The compliance of various committees was discussed. It was agreed to

communicate directly with all committee chairmen to encourage all members to

register as athletes to facilitate assessing compliance. Louise will follow

up with this letter. Some committees that appear to be in non-compliance

actually are, but the members have not properly registered. Dean Brenner will

follow up with the US Singlehanded Championship Committee. James Appel will

follow up with the Jr. Women's Championship Committee. Louise will follow up

with ISAF committee to inquire about having a domestic athlete representative

sit in on meetings, but not attend as part of the ISAF delegation.

3. Dean Brenner led some discussion and will follow up with further written

proposals. He also volunteered to create a draft copy of SAAC bylaws and

regulations.

4. The 2002 SAAC elections were discussed. Athlete registration will be

closed during the nomination and election process. The nominees receiving the

greatest number of votes will hold positions for four years, those with fewer

votes will fill the two year terms such that half of the four year terms and

half of the two year terms will be filled by A level athletes. The new SAAC

council will elect it's own Chair and Vice-chair. The new council will take

office after the 2002 AGM and the appropriate ratification by the Executive

Committee.

5. 2001 Fiscal year SAAC Budget: Conference Calls: 748.19, Web Page Costs:

650 Total: $1398.19. 2002 Estimated Budget: $1700.00. Funding is guaranteed

through 2003 from the current sources.

6. Suggestions of ways to increase and monitor diversity within US SAILING

are welcome and required by USOC. This includes minorities, women, and

disabled persons.

7. The SAAC supports the idea of representation for cruising sailors.

8. The C.R.E.W. agreement between volunteers and staff within US SAILING is

intended to promote a better working relationship. C.R.E.W. cards are

available in the US SAILING registration packet and through the US SAILING

office.

9. New Business

    -Athlete Definition in regard to offshore sailing and keelboat sailing.

No change was made at the meeting, but the members of the Offshore Committee

and Offshore Level and One Design Championship Committee were asked to

consider the definition and make recommendations for any changes to the SAAC.

Regattas should to be easily verifiable, clearly defined and represent active

competition. 

    -Promoting the SAAC registration through all possible means, paper and

electronic as well as contacting Glen McCarthy regarding page of the month.

    -A request was made that OSC budget information disseminated to athletes

include YTD vs. last year. This is being addressed through major changes in

the accounting software at US SAILING.
