California Yacht Club
For the Keane 2005 Star North American Championship

Race Management Committee
Chairman, Jim Tichenor's Presentation Address:
Emblematic
of excellence in race management, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy
was awarded originally by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in the late
1960s to recognize the club which ran the best regatta. The trophy was
retired for several years, and then donated to US SAILING in 1977. The
winner is selected on the basis of race management superiority and
evaluation by participating skippers. This
year's competition included entries from 10 clubs. Of these, three were
past winners with two of them winning the trophy twice.
Of the
events considered, one was a world championship, four were North
American Championships and one was a National championship. The list
also included an entry from a U S SAILING junior championship.
Among the
10 events, 739 boats competed in approximately 75 races with over 38
relocated marks. In addition, 452 competitor ballots were returned which
is over a 66 percent return rate.
This
year's recipient is being honored for its outstanding organization and
execution of the Keane 2005 Star North Americans from August 16-21 in
Marina del Rey, California. 41 teams from 6 different nations raced in 6
races during the event. The competitors were asked to rate the race
management with respect to reaction to wind changes, mark setting
accuracy and setting of marks, response to change and safety
considerations. Among the many comments from the competitors were
'magnificent job", "excellent', "super job" and "tremendous effort." The
protest committee report indicated that only one request for redress was
filed for a failure to check in prior to a race. That request was
denied. The legs were between 2 and 2.5 miles in length so moving both
the weather mark and the leeward end were very important to keep the
sailing field as large as possible
This
year's recipient is only the third club to win the St. Petersburg Trophy for
the third time. Ladies and Gentlemen, the St. Petersburg Trophy for 2005
is presented to California Yacht Club. Accepting for the club is Bill
Peterson, 2005 Commodore, Alex Benson, Regatta Chairman and Bill Stump,
Principal Race Officer.
