Briana Provancha, writing at Team HP:

Born and raised in San Diego, CA, I  fell in love with the water and was introduced to sailing by a family friend at age 8. In high school, I joined the Southwestern Yacht Club where my passion for sailing grew exponentially. My love for this sport began on the bay where I grew up sailing Sabots, but eventually progressed and found great success in FJs, 420s and 29ers.

A graduate of Point Loma High School in 2007, I sailed to victory in four high school sailing national championships and qualified for the ISAF youth world team in 2005, 2006 and 2007.  At age 16, I finished second at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Busan, South Korea and quickly became a threat on both the youth national and international circuits. I finally captured the title of the ISAF Youth World Champion in 2007 in Kingston, Canada. It was at this regatta where I met teammate Annie Haeger, who won the silver in the Laser Radial.  Standing on the podium that night in Kingston was when my Olympic dream came alive.

With this goal always in the back of my mind, I spent five years sailing for Boston College and had great success as an Eagle. I lead the Eagles to 2 Co-Ed National Titles, 1 Team Race National Title, 2 Women’s National Titles, and 2 Fowle Trophies.  Skippering and crewing in college provided me with a unique experience and a chance to excel in a different area of our sport.  I received accolades from Boston College as well, winning Women’s MVP and Outstanding Senior my last year.  I also was named Women’s Honorable Mention by the All American and All Conference Committees my Junior year.

I graduated from Boston College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. I cherish my college sailing memories and the friendships made while at Boston College.  I look forward to the start of another great journey this time with former BC teammate Annie Haeger in the 470.
