Five American Teams Currently in Top Ten at Hyeres
The US Sailing Team members competing
at Semaine Olympique Fran?ise in Hy?es, France have stayed strong
this week. After four days of racing in light, tricky and inconsistent
wind, five American teams are currently in the top ten overall: the
Yngling team of Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi (?Team
7?) secured second place for the second day in a row, after moving up
two spots yesterday and dropping their last race today. The Laser
Radial class is as tight as ever: Paige Railey moved up to second
place, after dropping her worst race yesterday and finishing second in
her last race today, and Anna Tunnicliffe is in sixth place. Laser
sailor Brad Funk holds the fifth spot after six races. And Mikee
Anderson-Mitterling and Dave Hughes are now in tenth place after seven
races in the Men's 470.
Conditions have been challenging for
sailors this week, but the regatta organizers are doing their best to
stay on schedule. There was no breeze today until late morning, when a
light six knots blew in, which increased to eight knots this
afternoon. Its inconsistency resulted in abandoned racing in the
Yngling, 49er, Tornado and Laser fleets. Depending on the fleet
size, today was the first of two days of racing in split fleets of
Gold, Silver, Bronze and Emerald. The medal races are scheduled for
Friday.
?Hyeres and Palma used to be the
venues where you had to hold on tight, because it was going to be a
fast ride. But this year, we've had to inch along, deal with slow
shifts and make big risk decisions," said Howe of Team 7, who won the
Yngling fleet last year at Semaine Olympique Fran?ise. Despite the
light air, the weather has been a treat - dry and warm, as opposed to
windy and wet, reportedly the norm for this time of year. Forecasters
predict the winds to begin to build tomorrow.
