2004 Olympic Diary

For the sixth time in his 24-year career with US SAILING, Olympic Director Jonathan Harley is accompanying the USA's Team to the Olympic Games.

His first Olympic diary  -- from Sydney, Australia -- offered a unique behind-the-scenes look at the daily life of the U.S. sailors at the Games.  Now in Athens with the 2004 Team, Jonathan is back with a second installment of his Olympic Diary.

August 5, 2004 - Our 49er Team measured in today, in what is a three-to-four hour process.  Chief International 49er class measurer Barry Johnson (AUS) checks everything VERY carefully.  Because 49er sails are standard, little sail measurement is performed.  However, each mainsail has been provided with the national flag of the country, as well as the three-letter country code and the names of both skipper and crew in bold letters.  This will show up very well for Gary Jobson’s TV coverage.

In addition to the mainsail identification, the spinnaker will also carry the national flag.  Barry signs each sail before measurement is complete and the boats are weighed as well to insure the one-design nature of the fleet.

Following a long day it was back to the Village for a shower and dinner.

Weather was a big topic of discussion today as there were two thunderstorms at the Olympic Village with torrential rain (visibility 50 metres).  And yet 30 miles away at Aghios Kosmas Sailing Center not a drop of rain fell.

Some of our athletes who have been training here for a month have taken some time off.  However, security has asked me not to mention who, much less where they have gone.  More about security in a later report.
