2004 Olympic Diary

For the sixth time in his 24-year career with US SAILING, Olympic Director Jonathan Harley is accompanying the USA's Team to the Olympic Games.

His first Olympic diary  -- from Sydney, Australia -- offered a unique behind-the-scenes look at the daily life of the U.S. sailors at the Games.  Now in Athens with the 2004 Team, Jonathan is back with a second installment of his Olympic Diary.

August 23 – Another very long day on the race course for everyone, with two Tornado races, one of which had a complete reversal in positions with some boats close hauled and others flying spinnakers -- all on the same leg.

To make the time limit, the committee shortened the last leg that turned out to be about 500 metres long.  Hardly enough time to catch up.  This resulted in about 4/5 boats asking for redress, which was denied.  The Mistrals completed two races in each division, and have only their final race to go.  49ers completed one race to get back on schedule; while the Stars completed only one race and so must sail tomorrow on their scheduled lay-day to catch up.  Tornados have the day off.

We had planned a Team dinner for the evening where we expect 50 people to attend: athletes, coaches, support personnel, spouses, family, friends and anyone who has been part of our Team who is here. The dinner is courtesy of the US SAILING Women’s Committee who solicited contributions at recent US SAILING meetings -- for a donation anyone could sign a banner wishing the team good luck.  Thank you Susan Epstein for putting this all together for us.

Everyone gathered for dinner at 2000 hours at a new seaside restaurant we stumbled upon that had only been open 25 days!  We had a wonderful evening with the beautiful setting providing a gorgeous backdrop for the great food and socializing.  Forty-five people attended and it was a smashing success.  The athletes with races tomorrow left by about 2130, and everyone else was home before midnight.
