August
19 – What a day and what a night! Sailing was great for Team
USA with our Yngling and 470 Women’s teams winning races. Our 470 Men
hold the lead in that class, with one race remaining in their series.
They cannot lose the Silver so it will be a fight with the Brits for
Gold on Saturday. It was a long day as well with Mistrals only getting
ashore after 7:30 p.m.The highlight of the day/evening was the Sports Illustrated Freestyle Party that was scheduled from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Invitations had to be responded to well in advance and the list filled up early. Numerous members of our team signed up, with about 15 there. It was THE party to attend. We had an awesome time and I’m going to name drop some of the individuals we met: Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Kerry Sanders and Natalie Morales all of NBC TV and the Today Show; Dan O’Brian the decathlete, of the famous Reebok “Dave vs. Dan” ads prior to the 1996 Games; NY Jets President Jay Cross, Jay Kriegal and Chris Sullivan all of the NY2012 bid effort; USOC Chef de Mission Herman Fraser was also there and pleased to hear of our 470 Men’s success as was Harvey Schiller formerly of USOC and Turner Sports. NY City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was somewhere in the crowd of 500+ guests, and Nancy Odell of Access Hollywood had just made her way onto the dance floor as we ran out of battery in the digital camera! The
venue was a well-known restaurant/club on the water just a few miles
north of the sailing venue. The food was incredible – just about
anything you could want was available – and the entertainment was
outstanding. Some of our group went home early, but most stayed until
well after 2:00 a.m., and when we left the party was still in full swing
with people still arriving. We will all need a good rest tonight before our big day tomorrow with the Finn, 470 and Ynglings finishing their Olympic Competition. |
