2000 OLYMPIC REGATTA BACKGROUND
All nations, with the exception of host country Australia, must qualify for entry in each of the nine classes (11 divisions) at the Olympic Regatta, scheduled for September 16-October 1, 2000, in Sydney, Australia. The qualification process is a result of entry limits set by the International Olympic Committee and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) which specify no more than 400 total athletes in sailing, along with other restrictions. Entry limits are designed to cut costs and will affect all Olympic sports, including sailing, which drew 450 competitors to the '96 Olympic Regatta in Savannah.

QUALIFYING EVENTS
Olympic qualifying regattas are the world championships of each class in 1998, 1999 and 2000, with each event qualifying approximately 30% of the entries. The remaining 10% will be determined by an ISAF Qualification Committee.
