Luther Carpenter
Position: 49er Coach
US Sailing Team Coach: Since 1990
Birthdate: 4/20/62
Birthplace: Atlanta, GA
Hometown: New Orleans, LA
College: L.S.U.
Significant Achievements: US SAILING’s 1996 Coach of the Year.
Carpenter singlehandedly developed the talent pool in the Europe class
once it was named an Olympic class in 1988, and was directly responsible
for the U.S. being the only country to medal in this class both in
Barcelona and Savannah. With changes in the boat's rigging and sailing
technique, Carpenter had to adapt to these changes and adopt new
coaching techniques to incorporate the technological advances.
"Carpenter's ability to adapt to different coaching situations is
his greatest strength," said ’96 Olympic Team Leader Chairman
Bill Shore (Newport, R.I.). "He can go from lead coach with one
team and then back off to support a private coach, helping to guide and
direct that project."

A self-described "weather geak" Bedford is the owner and chief
meteorologist at Sailing Weather Services, where he satisfies his deep
interest in weather by forecasting exclusively for competitive sailors
and adventurers. After sailing J/24s on the Great Lakes, Bedford made
the jump to the America’s Cup. His first job after college was
forecasting for Dennis Conner’s 1987 Stars and Stripes team in
Fremantle, Australia. Since then he has worked on every America’s Cup
as a team meteorologist.
Bedford first assisted the US Sailing Team in 1989 when he traveled to
Barcelona to better map the conditions that could be expected during the
‘92 Summer Olympics. Bedford accompanied the team to the ‘91
pre-Olympic and ‘92 Olympic regattas, briefing the sailors each
morning before racing, and reviewing weather factors with them at the
end of the day, a role he repeated as the team prepared and participated
in the 1996 Summer Olympics. His work with the US Sailing Team has
continued through the ‘97-2000 quadrennium as he provides sailors
daily weather data at international competitions and the Olympic Games.
