Foerster’s introduction to the sport that has figured so prominently in his adult life coincided with his family’s move from Alice, Texas, to Corpus Christi in 1973. That summer Foerster’s father, Leroy, was inspired to buy a boat after reading a sailing magazine while waiting in a dentist's office. According to the Senior Foerster, "I went up to Kingsville and bought it (a ten foot Styrofoam boat with one sail called the Sunflower). Then I went to the bookstore and bought a book on how to sail . . . we started learning the same day."

Recruited to skipper the family’s boat in 1982, J/24 class champion Bill Allen played a pivotal part in teaching Foerster about racing. In 1983 he entered the University of Texas and caught the school's sailing team by surprise as the unknown, who, unlike the majority of the sailing team, had not come through a junior sailing program. Foerster didn’t remain an unknown for long – while at UT, Foerster was a three-time ICYRA All-American.
