US SAILING
IRC Endorsement Protocol

IRC ENDORSEMENT Protocol (requires official measurements):

As race organizers may elect to require endorsed ratings, the following measurements will need to be taken by a US SAILING official measurer before the RORC can Endorse the IRC certificate for your boat.  As such, upon receipt of your completed application, we will then follow up with specific measurement requirements, which may include any & all of the follow, or some lesser combination there of.  Please arrange for the measuring to done in accordance with IRC Rules consecutively to submitting the application.

Weighing

  • Out-of-Water Setup- Empty Weight is the weight of the boat in the dry condition as detailed in the following: Requirements (MSWord, 54kb)  It is important to please make sure your boat is set up before the measurer arrives to save time and expense.

The ONLY loose items may be a spinnaker pole, bunk cushions (if carried when racing), and hatch boards. EVERYTHING else including anchors and safety gear, etc. shall be OFF.  See above.

  • Measuring- Once the boat is verified to be in the Empty Weight condition, a official measurer may weight the boat using a designated & calibrated load cell.  Single point measuring is preferred.

Weighing is very often beneficial in rating terms because for un-weighed boats we take a 'conservative' (i.e. light) view when there is any doubt. Even for boats with IMS certs, we prefer a boat to be weighed eventually because of the unfortunate variability in IMS DSPM.

Overhangs

  • In Water Setup- Again, as in the above, boats should first be inspected to ensure it is, as required by IRC rule 23, in the Empty Weight condition (rule 22).

  • Diagrams- Bow and Stern measurement diagrams available for reference, Overhangs.  Have your official measurer perform these (These measurements can only sensibly be taken in still water).

Rig & Sails

  • Measurements- Depends on the source of the data supplied.  Sail data measured by a sail maker is acceptable.

Additional Measurements

  • LOA, Beam, and Draft measurements may be found necessary to record.  Please ask you local measurer in advance of visiting the boat about these remaining measurement and any others.
