SAILING One-Design
Class Council Meeting October
12-14,
2000 1. Call to order and Introduction Chair Dick Martin called the
meeting to order and asked the members present to introduce
themselves. The list of attendees is shown in attachment 1. 2. Chairman's Remarks. Dick Martin discussed his tenure as
ODCC Chair and his desire to remain as the web liaison. He also
announced that SNAX would henceforth be a web‑based distribution
only. 3. Approval of Minutes. The minutes of the March 2000
meeting were approved as posted on the website. Clark Chapin pointed
out that the draft minutes from each meeting will be posted as soon as
possible. Corrections can be made continuously up until the approval
at the next meeting. 4. ISAF Advertising Code. The Council discussed the draft
ISAF Advertising Code. The Council passed the following resolution
unanimously: The One‑Design Class Council supports the ISAF
Executive Committee recommendation that for non‑ISAF classes,
the class shall determine their advertising level (with Category A as
a default). 5. ODCC Class Marketing Seminar. 5.1. Marketing
Seminar 13‑Oct‑00. Patty
Lawrence discussed the upcoming marketing seminar scheduled for Friday
13‑Oct. Stan Betts asked if the seminar materials could be
posted on the website 5.2. Future
Seminars. Future
seminars include class websites, promotion of regattas, newsletters,
and submitting articles for sailing publications. 6. ODCC Awards. The
Council discussed how to generate nominees for the ODCC Awards.
Nominations are due by December so that the balloting can occur and
the awards made at the Spring Meeting. A donation has ensured that the
awards will be funded. 7. Fleet Captains Manual and Class Management Handbook
Updates The Council discussed updates to
the Class Management Handbook and the Fleet Captains Manual. Clark
Chapin was appointed as the revision coordinator for the Class
Management Handbook. Clark will work with Dick Tillman to consider
additional material related to boardsailors and solicit new or revised
chapters. No volunteer for the Fleet Captains Manual was forthcoming. 8. ODCC website The Council discussed new and additional uses for the website. Stan Betts
asked about providing materials from seminars that have been
presented. This is easily doable, and the proceedings of the ODCC
seminar on Class Growth and Promotion have been posted on the ODCC
website since shortly after it was presented at the Spring, 2000
meeting in Chicago. Additional material will be added that is not
class specific and then linked to various pages. A
survey about web content can be added to the page as well as
circulated through the ODCC list server. Ken Signorello suggested
changing the class database from a search operation to a list. Ken
also suggested other enhancements such as cataloging champions,
cataloging links to tuning guides, but that has some difficulties in
keeping the links current. Reciprocal links with the member classes
are another idea that can be facilitated by including a "member
of US SAILING ODCC" logo on each class's site. No ODCC class has
currently opted to have USSAILING.net host their site, most likely
because most classes wish to retain their own domain names, but some
smaller classes may not see this as a barrier. It is possible to
handle on‑line class membership using the US SAILING credit card
processing, but this entails some policy changes and would also
include some sort of payment to US SAILING, since this does involve a
cost to the organization. Organizational members may be able to pay
their memberships on line, but the process is not simple or obvious. 9. ODCC List Server The Council discussed the ODCC list
server and how to revitalize it. Stan Betts suggested using this to
disseminate the issues and lessons from this meeting. 10.Championship of Champions The Council discussed this event
and how to generate entries as well as provide support for it. The
Council decided to more actively promote the event to the member
classes, even if this results in more applicants than can be
accommodated in any single year. This would then make selection of a
class's champion a more prestigious event all by itself. 11. New Business 11.1.
Visibility Programs The Council passed the following resolution: The One-Design Class Council
supports preserving the Boat Show and Regatta Visibility Programs by
means of staffing solely by volunteers with only promotional materials
from US SAILING. 11.2. Directory The Council passed the following
resolution: The One Design Class Council
supports that a means be found to publish a directory. 12.
Elections The
following persons were elected to the positions indicated:
