Nathan Indergaard Earns Old Pulteney Maritime Heroes Award

OP-Maritime-Heroes-logoNEW YORK, NY (January 11, 2016)—Old Pulteney, the single malt Scotch whisky known as the “Maritime Malt,” and US Sailing have announced that Nathan Indergaard of Marion, South Carolina will receive the 2015 Maritime Heroes Award. The Maritime Heroes Award recognizes men and women who are making significant contributions to educate, volunteer, advocate or simply encourage participation in sailing within their community or beyond. Indergaard will be recognized at the Sailing Leadership Forum 2016, hosted by US Sailing in San Diego next month. For the first time since the program’s inception, the winner will receive a five thousand dollar grant to continue their efforts in the sailing community.

Indergaard was declared the winner by public vote for his dedication and community achievements with US Sailing’s Reach Initiative, which utilizes sailing as a platform to teach science, technology, engineering and math while establishing a love of learning and exploration. Despite hailing from a landlocked region of South Carolina, this year’s winner found ways to compensate for the lack of ocean access. Through field trips, guest speakers and RC land yachts, Indergaard brought concepts to life—successfully implementing two of the ten Reach modules in sixth grade classrooms to teach students about wind speed and buoyancy during the first year of the program.

“Nathan exemplifies the values and character that we look for in our award recipient. By establishing the Reach program in his community, he has afforded students the opportunity to learn and explore the world in ways that they might never have otherwise been exposed to,” says David Lind, Vice President, International Beverage USA.

“We congratulate Nathan for this very special recognition and thank him for the important role that he has played in introducing young students to the sport of sailing, while offering them inspiration and enriching their lives in the process,” said Jack Gierhart, Executive Director of US Sailing.

Since 2012, Old Pulteney has proudly served as the official Scotch whisky of US Sailing. The distillery is located in Wick, Scotland and is one of the northernmost distilleries on the Scottish mainland. The whisky matures in hand-selected oak casks and is said to contain characteristics of the seafaring region that it hails from.
