US SAILING
Annual
General Meeting
St. Petersburg Hilton, FL
MULTIHULL REPORT TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Multihull Committee, Saturday, October 20, 2001
1. Youth
Multihull Championship: We
held our first ever US Youth Multihull Championship for the Hoyt-Jolley Trophy at Spray
Beach Yacht Club, New Jersey, hosted by Faye Bennet.
Faye
and her crew of dedicated volunteers did a marvelous job.
The 20 competitors enjoyed a pre-race seminar and were coached by Hobie 16
expert, Wally Myers. Youth Team, Anders Straume and
Hunter Stunzi, went on to become the US SAILING Youth representatives to the 2001 ISAF
Youth World Championship in Crozon-Morgat, France.
2. Fast
and Fun Youth Program: The
Fast and Fun trailer is now in California after a very successful summer. Weve sailed with over 2000 children to date. The past summer, we attended events in St. Petersburg
and Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Toledo, Ohio; Culver, Indiana; and Elk, Lake, Maryland.
Some
good things have happened as a result of the Fast and Fun Youth Program. We helped to revitalize the Fort Walton Beach
Yacht Club Youth Training Program by training 8 new Level I Instructors, enrolling 100
youth in their training program and reached out to 300 children.
Alter Cup Committee, Saturday, October 20, 2001
1. Alter
Cup: Pensacola Yacht Club held the 2001 US SAILING
Championship for the Alter Cup. It was a very
successful event.
2. Format
Changes: There was a general discussion concerning the
Alter Cup Format which resulted in the decision to allow for a cut with Gold and Silver
fleets continuing to race on the last day.
3. Sites
for 2002: Petitions
were received from two venues; one from Los Angeles, and the other from Syracuse, NY. The Hobie Cat Corporation will be supplying the boats.
Multihull Council,
Saturday, October 20, 2001
1. Community Sailing
Center: Barb and Chip Short
of Clearwater, FL, are working with the
Multihull Council to rehabilitate a dilapidated section of beach by turning it into a
Community Sailing Center. A partnership has developed to help them instruct children using
the US SAILING Certified Instructor Program. The
Multihull Council plans to help by offering partial scholarships for new instructors.
2. Budget Review and
Discussion: Mr. Bill Jolley is
proposing to give $8,000 to US SAILING in February, $1,500
to go to the Alter Cup, $1000 to the National Sailing Symposium,
and the balance to the Fast and Fun Program.
The single biggest expense is
the money it costs to haul the trailer around at $1.50
per mile.
3. Youth Multihull
Sailing Championship: The MHC will continue to promote a Multihull Youth
Championship for the Hoyt-Jolley Trophy and will couple this event with a Youth
Championship for Windsurfing.
Championship
of Committees, Saturday, October 20, 2001
The Multihull Racing Team with Jeff
Rubin of the Miami Sailing Center at the helm, Art Stevens, Gorden Isco, and Deborah
Schaefer as crew, finished a very respectable 6th place on the Sonar, even though one hull
was missing.
Respectfully
Submitted,
