Multihull Council
Spring Meeting
Adam’s Mark Hotel, Charlotte, NC
March 23, 2001
Report
1. Budget
Review and Discussion:
Hoyt-Jolley Restricted Account:
Bill Jolley cut a
check in the amount of $18,000 with $2,000 designated for the Sailing
Symposium in San Diego and $2,000 to be used for this year’s Alter
Cup to be held at Pensacola Yacht Club.
Fast and Fun Youth Program:
The remaining $14,000 will go toward the Fast and Fun Program
in 2001. There is $3,000 remaining from last year, which gives us
$17,000 to work with. It costs $1.50 per mile to move the trailer
containing all the equipment and boats and $10,000 to move the trailer
back and forth across the United States. Consequently, Art Stevens is
actively seeking a Title
Sponsor for this program.
Hobie Cat Company recently
donated three Hobie Waves to this program, so now we have eight. Mistral also donated five additional Windgliders, so now we have
nine. There is a need to expand the equipment. Art could use a safety
boat for retrieving stranded children on calm days. Until now, Art has
been relying on the good graces of whoever he can dig up at the
program site.
781 kids sailed in this program last year. Art has been reaching out
to children who may not normally have the opportunity to sail: 8-14
year olds, located through Girls and Boys Clubs, the YMCA, including
inter-city kids. The kids just want to have fun, so they may not
actually be sailing on the boats as they are playing on them.
Thus far, Art has commitments to Fort Walton Yacht Club for May 19 and
20; Toledo, Ohio for June; and Island Heights, NJ for July 23-24,
2001.
The week before the FWYC event, a Level I Instructor Training Class is
scheduled. There are seven scholarships remaining for individuals who
are interested in instructing children on multihulls.
2.
Chairman’s Report:
Art Stevens recited a portion of the vision statement which
says “equal opportunity and fun in sailing for people of all ages
and ability.” Multihulls are not getting that opportunity. We want
inclusion on every level. This is not US SAILING’s fault; this is
our fault. Therefore, Art has set members of the Multihull Council to
the task of moving into the mainstream starting with these meetings at
US SAILING.
3. Alter
Cup:
The MHC approved Jamie Diamond as Steve Leo’s replacement as
chairman of the Alter Cup Committee.
The next Alter Cup event will be held April 22-26, 2001 on Inter 20s.
The venue will be in Pensacola, FL. The Pensacola Yacht Club and the
Key Team have joined forces to put on a premier event.
Respectfully
Submitted,
