III. Approval of Minutes:
The minutes from March 2003 meeting were approved as written. The MHC wants
to publicly thank Deb Schaefer for coming to all the meetings and taking
minutes for the Multihull Council and Committee meetings.
IV. Fast and Fun Update:
Dan Mangus reports that, upon the
recommendations of his doctor, Art Stevens can no longer take Fast and Fun
on the road. Art Stevens drove the truck and personally oversaw all aspects
of the program. There was not enough money to fund the program and the boats
were getting old. The equipment, which included 45 life jackets, 18 Hobie
Waves, a Hobie Dragoon, 6 Windgliders, 6 Kayaks, and a Hobie Skiff, were
sold to other youth programs. Fast and Fun earned $25,000 from the sail of
the trailer and boats. Art was reimbursed $3,000 for his expenses. That left
$22,000 to be added to the Fast and Fun Kitty. Add to this, the $9,000
balance in the Fast and Fun Fund. This leaves a total of $32,000 to be used
for future programs.
V. 2004 US SAILING Youth Multihull
Championships: Chairman, Dan
Mangus reports that the 2004 event will be held on Hobie 16s at the Sea
Cliff Yacht Club, Long Island, NY June 25, 26, 27 with June 24th
as the arrival date. There will be a clinic and practice race on Friday.
This club also hosted the Little Americas Cup, so Dan is expecting a well
run event. He expects 30 teams or 60 youths to participate. The first
eligible team will go to Korea in the summer of 2005.
ISAF has picked the Hobie 16 as the Youth Multihull Championship boat
for the next three years. The Hobie 16 held its own in the boat tests. The
jury is out on what boat to support in the future. ISAF wants a boat which
will cost about $8000 with a spinnaker. The manufacturers say that such a
boat will cost about $10,000.
VII. Ban Inflatable Life Jackets at
Youth Events: This is already a
condition for the youth Multihull Championship Events. The Multihull
Committee supports the ban of inflatable life jackets at Youth events.
VII. Sailor Athlete Council Membership
Drive: SAC Chairman, Dean
Brenner is requesting that current members of US SAILING register today as
athletes and that those sailors who are not members, join now and register
as a sailor athlete and gain a greater voice. Dean will return to do a
presentation at the Multihull Council Meeting later today.
VIII. Review Multihull Council
Membership: Chairman Dan Mangus
is looking for people who want to take an active roll in this Committee.
IX. Youth Multihull Championship
Trophy: The Multihull Committee
wants to recognize Past Chairman, Art Stevens, for his impact on the Youth
Multihull Championship and for his work on Fast and Fun. The Committee
drafted a Deed of Gift for a new trophy to be called the Arthur J. Stevens
Trophy. This Trophy may be held for One Year at the Winning Team’s home
yacht club or at the sponsoring yacht club.
X. New Business:
Dan Mangus gave a brief overview of the Restructuring process. The Multihull
Council may lose its two votes. In the new structure, councils may not exist
at all. CSA will get us representation in all areas.
XI. Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30pm and
was followed immediately by the Multihull Council Meeting. The next meeting
of the Multihull Committee will be held in conjunction with the Fall AGM at
Portland, Oregon.
Respectfully
Submitted,
Deborah K. Schaefer,
Secretary |
