Daniel Mangus of Oceanside,
CA, formerly Vice Chairman, has been
elected Chairman of US SAILING's Multihull Council to replace Arthur J.
Stevens who resigned for health reasons effective January 31, 2004. We
welcome Dan as the Council’s Chairman and John Williams of Pensacola, FL, as
Vice Chairman. Deborah Schaefer of Port Clinton, OH, remains Council
Secretary, and the ten Area Representatives round out the MHC Executive
Committee.
Art Stevens brought a lot of offshore multihull experience to US SAILING. In
the 60s, he and his wife, Nina, had the first
yacht brokerage in
California
solely devoted to multihulls. Among many achievements, he
is proud of his Transpac win in 1976 taking first to finish and first
corrected. He is a long time member of King Harbor Yacht Club and was
formerly active in Southern California Yachting
Association. He still has his Formula
40, Whiplash.
As Multihull Council Chairman for four years, Art brought an enthusiastic
voice to US SAILING on behalf of multihull sailors . We regret that he is
stepping down from all of his activities at US SAILING which include the
Fast & Fun program and the Multihull Committee, the organizing authority for
the Youth Multihull Championship for the Hoyt-Jolley Cup. Last year he
learned to drive a truck so he could drive the 40’ Fast & Fun trailer up and
down the country.
He was also a member of the
Alter Committee, the US SAILING Nominating Committee and
Regional Training Coordinator for the
Los Angeles area. For more, see

Art wrote recently: Over the last few years our Council has managed to
introduce multihull sailing to over 5,000 children. We have sailed with
hundreds of people with disabilities showing them the joy of being on the
water. Our Alter Cup and Junior Championships are some of the best sailing
adventures US SAILING has to offer. We are on firm financial ground with the
Alter Cup and it is my intention to see to it the youth multihull
championship receives the benefits of the sale of Fast & Fun to provide for
future events. All in all, I would say we have made a significant impact in
the sailing community and I have every confidence Dan and the rest of our
Council will continue these efforts in their own way. So please continue to
support them.
As information,
Art went to France for the ISAF youth multihull evaluations shortly after
the US SAILING AGM in October 2003 and then continued to Spain for the ISAF
meetings. He got very sick in France and had a terrible reaction to the
prescribed medications he was given. On returning home, his local doctors
made it worse.
We
hope Art has a continued recovery and our best wishes go to him and Nina.
