The BIG news is SEATTLE produced over 410 kids and adults along with 27
volunteers working in some rather cold water (from a Southern Californian's
point of view) to showcase the Sail Sand Point Sailing School program. The
local Hobie fleet put on a real impressive show doing all the right things
necessary to make our program such a huge success. Sand Point will soon
become one of the best schools to learn about sailing in Multihulls if Laura
Sullivan, Leslie Keller and Caleb Tarleton have their way. These people move
mountains.
Every program we do is different and Lake Coeur d'Alene was no exception.
First, two days of rain and wind produced very few people wanting to learn
about sailing so we decided to test the new Dragoon. IT IS NOT an
adult boat. All the adults wanted to sail it and we had a hard time keeping
them off. Miles Moore and his crew of volunteers even wanted to hide it from
us on the last day so they could continue giving sailing instructions to
their youth. We had a fight on our hands but in the end they decided they
would have to purchase a few very soon. The Dragoon and the Mystere 4.3 are
supposed to be for kids and I hope the adults will try these out but let the
kids have some time on them to. We ended up sailing with 250 or so people in
4 days. Not up to our normal turnout but the folks keep coming back. One
group of kids from a group home for troubled kids produced a real first time
sailor. In two hours of instruction this kid was sailing on all points with
the Wave and having a blast. These kids don't have the expectation of a
future with personal success so just maybe we might have a turn-around
child. Kind of makes it all worth while.
Fast & Fun has moved on to Hood River, Oregon, where we
will start working with local children introducing them to Waves and
Windsurfers. Report follows soon Best Regards,
Art Stevens
