The Youth Sailing
Program of the US SAILING, sponsored by the Multihull Council and US
Windsurfing returned to Sand Point Magnuson Park, Seattle, and introduced
over 400 children, their parents or guardians to sailing.
Art Stevens,
Chairman of the Multihull Council of US SAILING, arrived at Sail Sand
Point on the North shore of Sand Point Magnuson Park, driving the truck
with eight Hobie Cat Wave Catamarans, a Hobie Dragoon Catamaran, eight
Mistral Windsurfers, three Starboard Windsurfers and six Hobie Cat Kayaks.
This year, the equipment arrived a week early so that the Hobie Waves
could be used in the Sail Sand Point Youth Multihull Sail Camp. Seventeen
kids and four instructors took part in this sold-out program. The
Catamarans were also used in the Open Sailing Program during the week and
were a big hit.
On Saturday and Sunday, the free FAST and FUN program was held at the Sail
Sand Point location. Fifty-four volunteers from Hobie Cat Division Four,
Sail Sand Point Sailing School, Northwest Board Sailing Association,
Tacoma Sea Scouts, and The Boeing Company provided on-the-water
instruction, registration, and safety boat supervision during the weekend.
As shown in the pictures (to follow), this was a great event, and every
one had a good time. Local groups that took advantage of the program
included: Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Community for Youth, Friends of
the Children, and Cub Scout Groups.

This was an
excellent opportunity to introduce people to sailing that would not
normally have this chance. We hope to continue this program in the future,
and make it an annual event in Seattle. This free program from US SAILING
is supported by donations to US SAILING Multihull Council and to the local
volunteer groups that assisted in the program.
