About the Judges Traing and Testing Subcommittee
History:
At the spring 2004 meeting in Mobile, an ad hoc working party was formed by
Chairman
Ted Everingham to establish standards and processes to ensure a consistent and
high
level of quality in the instructors at our US SAILING Judges Workshop. The
working
party consists of Judges Committee members Bruce Cook, Tom Roberts, and Sandy
Grosvenor, with Sandy acting as the chair.
Goals:
The goal of the JTTSC is to propose a process that
will ensure that the instructors of the
Workshop are knowledgeable in rules and jury processes, good presenters, well
organized
as seminar leaders, and are familiar with and faithful to the seminar materials.
This focus
includes not only the approval of workshop instructors but also the broader need
for maintaining
and improving workshop materials, for reviewing course evaluations, for
incorporating good suggestions into the workshop program, and for maintaining
the test and the study questions.
Standards for Instructors:
• All US SAILING Judges Workshops will have at a minimum one lead instructor
approved by the JTTSC. We encourage (but do not
require) seminars to be co-taught
by two Instructors with diversity in the experience base between the
instructors. A good mix may be a more experienced lead instructor who may not
be local to the host venue, assisted by an instructor who is locally based.
• All lead instructors must be current US SAILING Senior Judges. All assisting
instructors must be at least current US SAILING Judges. Occasionally, for a
specific module or purpose, a knowledgeable and respected person who is not a
certified Judge may be approved on a one-time basis by the JTTSC.
However, the
strong preference is that we should get them certified if they are knowledgeable
and respected.
How to become an Instructor:
• To become an approved Lead Instructor, a judge must have been an assisting
instructor within the previous year. The lead instructor of a seminar at which
the
candidate has taught must have provided an evaluation of the candidate’s
knowledge of the materials, presentation skills, and overall ability to present
the
course. The JTTSC will review the evaluation and, if
appropriate, add the
instructor to the list of approved lead instructors.
