Smallboat Instructor Programs

Chart Your Course is the instructor certification path for all instructors who want to become US Sailing Certified smallboat instructors. Each level provides a structured progression and offers opportunities for advancement. With the development of two different tracks (management and coaching), it provides opportunities for continuing education and professional development.

 

***This is a non-certification level course***

The Sailing Counselor (SC) course is designed to prepare camp counselors, and staff from community sailing and scouting programs, to supervise small boat recreational sailing activities typically conducted on sheltered and protected waters. The emphasis is on safety and hands-on practice to familiarize candidates with proper terminology and boating techniques. Sailing Counselor training will also provide a model for how a counselor might structure actual sailing activities.

The Smallboat Level 1 Sailing Instructor Certification Course, is designed to provide sailing instructors with information on how to teach more safely, effectively and creatively. The goal of the program is to produce highly qualified instructors, thereby reducing risk exposure for sailing programs. Topics covered in the course include: Classroom and On-The-Water teaching techniques, risk management, safety issues, lesson planning, creative activities, ethical concerns and sports physiology and psychology.

The Smallboat Level 2 Instructor workshop focuses on developing knowledge and skill in teaching sail theory, sail controls, introductory management skills, spinnaker and trapeze use ( and instruction) and powerboat operation for emergency situations. Safety awareness is a major component of this course, with instruction on how to address capsize recovery, or prevent entrapment while operating a powerboat. It is a certification level course that combines classroom and on the water education with a post-course online testing component.

The Smallboat Level 3 Coach Workshop provides coaches with information on how to effectively develop performance boat handling and racing skills and instill in athletes the importance of ethical behavior and sportsmanship in the sport of sailing. It is a two-day workshop that includes topics such as race management procedures, team management and logistics and drills. This is the competitive branch of the new competitive and non competitive Level 3 tracks that US Sailing offers.

The Smallboat Level 3 Head Instructor Course is designed for experienced instructors who have assumed a position of leadership within their organization and are looking for training to match. This level focuses on management and oversight of sailing programs including administrative components such as curriculum development, staff management and communication techniques. This workshop is the non-competitive side of the Level 3 instructional track . A certification level course, it also includes an online testing component. Level 2 Certification is a prerequisite for this workshop.

The Level 4 Coach Certification Program is designed to provide Continuing Education (CE) for those whose profession involves small boat  coaching. The program utilizes a combination of US Sailing programming and third-party providers to issue Continuing Education Units (CEU). In order to be eligible for a particular certification, Candidates must be a current Level 3 Coach in order to pursue Level 4 Coach certification.

The Level 4 Director Certification Program is designed to provide Continuing Education (CE) for those whose profession focuses on the administrative side of sailing programs, specifically involving marketing, budgeting, human resources and curriculum development. The program utilizes a combination of US Sailing programming and third-party providers to issue Continuing Education Units (CEU). In order to be eligible for a particular certification, Candidates must be a current Level 3 Head Instructor in order to pursue Level 4 Instructor certification.

The US Sailing Smallboat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Trainer Course certifies qualified US Sailing instructors to train Smallboat Level 1 sailing instructor candidates to teach beginning sailing. The Level 1 Instructor Trainer Course is conducted by Master Instructor Trainers who are experts in the field of sail training.
