J.D. Reddaway is the youngest-ever recipient of the US SAILING Sportsmanship Award

US SAILING AWARDS NATIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP TROPHY TO 14-YEAR-OLD J.D. REDDAWAY

US SAILING has presented its National Sportsmanship award, the W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Trophy, to J.D. Reddaway (Suwanee, GA) for his outstanding display of sportsmanship behavior at the Orange Bowl Junior Olympic Sailing Festival last December. Reddaway, who at the age of 14 is the youngest-ever recipient of the trophy, was presented with the trophy at Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville last Saturday where he was competing in the Thistle Orange Peel Regatta as crew for his father. Reddaway now joins a long list of highly respected sailors who have received US SAILING’s W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Sportsmanship Trophy since the award was first presented 20 years ago. The list includes such well-known sailors as Olin J. Stephens, Dave Perry, Harry Carpenter, and Buddy Melges.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Matthew Gove

Matthew Gove

At age 19, Matthew Gove is the youngest US SAILING certified race officer in the country. The native of Woods Hole, MA, has been messing around in boats his entire life. He was just 10 years old when he hopped on a committee boat for the first time. When he headed south to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, where he's now a sophomore, one of the first things he did was hook up with the sailing team. But after his first semester, he switched from sailing a 420 to driving a race committee boat. In March 2006, he became a principal race officer and eight months later became certified. When he’s not hitting the physics and math books, he enjoys assisting Eckerd’s varsity sailing coach Jim Terkelsen with practices. In addition to working all the regattas at Eckerd College, he volunteers at St. Petersburg Yacht Club, where he has run a mark set boat for two NOOD regattas and worked the Team Racing World Qualifiers. Matthew is looking forward to November, when Eckerd hosts the fall Atlantic Coast Championship. His goal is to keep improving his skills and help ensure Eckerd’s waterfront program is a great place for college sailing.

US SAILING SPRING MEETING BRINGS TOGETHER PASSIONATE SAILORS

US SAILING's Spring meeting wrapped up on Sunday after three days of meetings, hallway discussions, idea sharing, and decision-making. The meeting kicked off with a presentation by US SAILING President Jim Capron who introduced the organization's new mission, "Providing leadership for the sport of sailing in the U.S.," and vision, "We will be the recognized leader in training and certification, in support for the racing sailor, and in facilitating access to sailing." Executive Director Charlie Leighton followed with an overview of 2006 highlights, which include a budget surplus and membership upturn, and 2007 goals. Throughout the weekend, numerous presentations were given and discussions held on leading and growing the sport of sailing.

ONE-DESIGN LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE AWARDS PRESENTED

During US SAILING's Spring meeting, Jack Lynch (Annapolis, MD) was presented with the National One-Design Service award and Dave Michos (Euclid, OH) received the One-Design Leadership award. Jack Lynch has promoted one-design sailing for 50 years and has served as a mentor to an entire generation of sailors, race committees, judges, and even commodores. Dave Michos exemplifies what it takes to be a leader in one-design sailing. In 2003, he started a new Jet 14 fleet at Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland with just three members. Since then, the fleet has grown to 16 boats in just three years.

LIVE ONLINE DEMONSTRATION OF US SAILING REGATTA NETWORK

US SAILING is offering a live online demonstration of the new US SAILING Regatta Network registration system on Wednesday, March 28th at 7 p.m. Eastern. The US SAILING Regatta Network is designed to help sailing organizations with online event registration, fleet management and scoring of any type of sailing event. The tool provides “ease and speed” for both regatta organizers and participants. Organizers can stop worrying about credit card payments, race day registration headaches and posting final results because the US SAILING Regatta Network does all that.
> A limited number of spots for the online demonstration of this exciting new tool is available, so please sign up early by going to https://www.gotomeeting.com/register/974592846.
