ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN SAILING
February 21, 2007

The Thistle class is the third largest one-design classes
in the U.S. according to a recent
US SAILING - Sailing World one-design survey

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL ONE-DESIGN CLASS MANAGEMENT

Make no mistake. One-design classes are in an increasingly competitive business. Their "customer" has more and more options, more and more choices. A few casual class volunteers who meet once a year will lose business and watch their membership decline. A few energetic, well‑organized volunteers who have a plan and communicate frequently will preside over a healthy, growing one-design class. Of course it's not quite that simple, but the basics of managing a successful one-design class aren't that complicated, either. There are certain basic "commandments" that can, if followed, put your class on track.
> Find out more by reading the full article by Gay S. Lynn at http://www.ussailing.org/member/TenCommandments.asp. More articles about one-design class management are available in US SAILING's Class Management Handbook. This 200-page reference binder is essential to growing or starting a new one-design class or fleet. $20.00 for US SAILING-members, $55.00 for non-members. US SAILOR Of The Week
Carol Ewing

Carol Ewing

You can just call Carol Ewing the Queen of Regatta Management. Over the years, Carol has been involved in countless regattas, from running registration at the Orange Bowl Regatta with 650 junior sailors to being the jack of all trades at the Rolex Miami OCR. At every regatta, this Miami-native can be counted on to be prepared as much as possible and if unexpected problems arise, she'll just wave her magic wand and come up with a solution. Carol loves managing events because she just wants to make sure people have a good time at regattas, from the racing to shore-side activities. Her husband Jon and son Scott are sailors too. Jon and Carol recently sold their Lightning but still get out on the water regularly. Scott is also an avid sailor who hopes to qualify for the Opti National Team this year. Since Carol first started sailing at age 25, she has played many roles in the sailing community. Her dedication to the sport earned her the title of first female Commodore at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami, which she held in 2000-'01. Managing events isn't exactly the only thing that keeps her busy these days, she also owns her own printing company, Lightning Printing. We're glad she has time for her passion and look forward to seeing her at many upcoming regattas, including the '08 Star Worlds in Miami, to make sure everything runs smoothly. Carol, the tiara is on its way in the mail!

TAKING ON THE WORLD BY ELLEN MACARTHUR NOW AVAILABLE AT US SAILING

At twenty-four, Ellen MacArthur became the youngest person ever to complete the Vendée Globe singlehanded nonstop sailboat race around the planet and the second woman--and second fastest sailor--to circumnavigate the globe alone. Taking On the World is Ellen's story--of her longing for adventure, her indomitable will, and her overwhelming passion for the sea. Ellen MacArthur saved her school lunch money for eight years to buy her first boat, an 8-foot sailing dinghy. At eighteen she sailed around Britain alone, then began a string of impressive finishes in solo long-distance races that culminated in her record-setting performance in the 2000 - 2001 Vendée Globe. In 2002 she won the Route du Rhum singlehanded transatlantic race in the 60-foot Kingfisher. In January 2004, she launched the 75-foot trimaran B&Q, which was specifically built to set solo speed-sailing records, including the 24-hour record and the transatlantic record.
> Visit http://store.ussailing.org now to order your copy of Ellen MacArthur's Taking on the World. $12.50 for US SAILING members, $14.95 for non-members.

YACHT CLUB MANAGERS/CLUB OFFICERS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN SURVEY

In order to increase our understanding of yacht club operations, US SAILING has put together a quick survey. The survey is intended for the yacht club manager or club  officer who can tell us more about sailing/racing trends, membership, youth programs, and other club operations. This study will take no more than 10 minutes and your participation is greatly appreciated. The first 75 that complete the survey will receive a gift certificate from Landfall Navigation.
> If you're a yacht club manager or club officer, please contact Brian Welsh at US SAILING (BrianWelsh@ussailing.org) for details on how to participate in the survey.
