NATIONAL SAILING PROGRAMS PARTICIPANTS HELP REBUILD PONTCHARTRAIN YACHT CLUB

For the hundreds of sailing program organizers who attended US SAILING's National Sailing Programs Symposium (NSPS) last week, it was quite a busy few days. Last Wednesday, a small group of attendees went to Pontchartrain Yacht Club to help the club with its rebuilding efforts from hurricane Katrina. The volunteer work force spent the day working on the several projects, including renovating 45 feet of south docks fendering, building a launching pontoon suitable for 420s, dismantling temporary above-ground pool, and spearing 2 truckloads of river sand over low spots in front yard. The rest of the long weekend for all participants was filled with educational presentations, idea sharing, cocktail parties, and much more. On Saturday and Sunday, the NSPS participants were joined by one-design class leaders who attended the One-Design Sailing Symposium. The Symposiums were presented by Vanguard Sailboats.

LATEST NEWS FROM US SAILING'S 2007 ROLEX MIAMI OCR

It is crowded on Biscayne Bay this week with 855 athletes from 48 countries competing in US SAILING’s 2007 Rolex Miami OCR. The turnout has broken all prior attendance records. A three-quarters majority of sailors hail from foreign countries -- all of them Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls charting their courses to Beijing, China in 2008. The U.S. has 170 boats entered, while Canada is the second-largest contingent with 70 boats. Great Britain and Germany follow with 39 and 25, respectively. Regular fleet racing continues through Friday, January 26, and is followed by one day of medal racing (for Olympic classes only) on Saturday, January 27. On Wednesday-evening, the competitors will enjoy a dinner hosted by Nautica, sponsor of the US Sailing Team. The regatta wraps up on Saturday with closing ceremonies hosted by Rolex Watch U.S.A.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Phil Kurczewski

Phil Kurczewski

Phil Kurczewski is a life-long Detroit area resident and sailor. Phil was listening to a local Children’s Leukemia Foundation (CLF) radiothon in 2004 when he was struck by how normal recreational activities are often curtailed by leukemia. After talking with CLF, Kurczewski organized a sailing outing through his sailing club, Albatross Yacht Club. Volunteer boat owners are paired up with families and everyone gets a chance to get out on Lake St. Clair. When everyone returns from a fun and refreshing day on the water, they are treated to an afternoon picnic and barbeque at the marina. The 45-member yacht club has no club house or docks. Even so, for the last three years Phil has run the event with the help of Markley Marina in Harrison Township. In 2006, nearly 20 CLF families were able to participate in the mid-June weekend event. This is now an annual event with other local clubs participating. Phil was named Yachtsman of the Year by Albatross Yacht Club for his creation and management of this wonderful annual event.

WINDSURFERS: LEARN THE CARVE JIBE WITH THIS DVD

The 82-minute DVD "The 12 Step Jibe by Dasher" tackles the one move that many windsurfers recognize as one of the biggest challenges in windsurfing - the carve jibe. The one moment that most advanced windsurfers typically name as their most memorable moment on a windsurf board is the first time they ever planed out of a jibe. The 12 Step Jibe will help you grasp the logic of the jibe theory and it will build your confidence and understanding every step of the way.
