ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
US SAILING’S MOUNT GAY RUM SPEAKER SERIES US SAILING and Mount Gay Rum, the Official Rum of US
SAILING, are kicking off the third year of the popular US SAILING Mount Gay
Rum Speaker Series later this month. The 2007 season will consist of 16
events held at sailing organizations nationwide from January through April,
bringing the country’s top sailing experts into the hometowns of many
sailors. Speakers confirmed for this year’s season include renowned sailing
commentator Gary Jobson, America’s Cup Principal Race Officer Peter Reggio,
racing rules expert Dave Perry, and past Yngling World Champions and Olympic
hopefuls Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe, and Debbie Capozzi, to name a few. In
addition to title sponsor Mount Gay Rum, the program is also sponsored by
Landfall Navigation, Sailing World magazine, and Sunsail.
ABOUT THE US SAILOR OF THE WEEK FEATURE
Do you know a passionate sailor who is always on the water, taking every
rules quiz or searching for that perfect cruising lunch spot? Or do you know
someone who is newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like
a sponge? Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy
to building a fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We
want to know about them! US SAILING SYMPOSIUMS KICK OFF IN NEW ORLEANS
It is getting crowded in New Orleans with hundreds of sailing program
organizers and one-design fleet organizers flooding the downtown Marriott
Hotel for the National Sailing Programs Symposium and One-Design Sailing
Symposium. In addition to being able to network, attend presentations on
countless topics, listen to keynote speakers, and visit local sailing
organizations, participants also get to visit exhibitors' booths and travel
to a few local sailing organizations.
APPLICATION PERIOD NOW OPEN FOR '07 U.S. YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
Applications are now being accepted for the 2007 U.S. Youth Championship,
the premier youth sailing championship of the year. The event, sponsored by
Vanguard Sailboats and Nautica, will be held in Lasers, Laser Radials, Club
420s, and 29ers at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, LA, from June 22 to
28. Applications for the event will be accepted until March 15, 2007. The
2007 U.S. Youth Champs will be the qualifier for the doublehanded boys and
girls in the 29er for the 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship,
to be held in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in July 2007. Teams must be single
sex. US SAILING AND PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN TEAM UP
US SAILING and Performance Catamaran, one of the top multihull boat builders
in the U.S., have signed a two-year agreement to provide Nacra SL16s at the
U.S. Youth Multihull Championship in 2007 and 2008. The selection of the
SL16 is in line with the International Sailing Federation, which has named
the SL16 the multihull boat for its Youth World Championship. The 2007 U.S.
Youth Multihull Championship will be held March 29 - April 1 and hosted by
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA. Registration for the ’07
event will open by February 1, 2007. DRY CREEK VINEYARD OFFERS UNIQUE CRUISE OPPORTUNITY
Long-time US SAILING partner Dry Creek Vineyard is inviting sailors to
participate in a wine cruise in June 2007. Join second-generation winery
proprietors, Don and Kim Wallace, along with fellow wine lovers on a 7-day
voyage from Rome to Barcelona, June 15-22, 2007, aboard the Silver Whisper.
Sail to exotic ports along the coast of Italy and France, ending in
Barcelona, Spain. Following the cruise, join Don and Kim for several more
days to witness America’s Cup racing in Valencia, Spain. HOW TO USE THE CRUISING SPINNAKER
The cruising spinnaker is the one sail that greatly improves the performance
of a cruising boat because it can add so much speed. On light air days, it
provides the horsepower to keep a boat moving without resorting to the loud,
smelly engine. In stronger winds, a cruising spinnaker turbo charges any
boat. The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z teaches more than just how to jibe
and trim the cruising spinnaker. Viewers learn handy tips on how two people
can hoist and douse, what kind of sheets work best, what equipment is needed
to use the sail, how to enlist the help of the wind in moving the sail
across the boat during jibes, and much, much more. TEAM RACING SUMMIT: FEBRUARY 3 IN LARCHMONT, NY
Meet this week's US SAILOR of the Week, Joel Hanneman, and numerous other
passionate team racers at the upcoming Team Racing Summit, February 3 in
Larchmont, NY. All interested parties are invited
to attend, including sailors and team race event managers, umpires, and
representatives from clubs seeking to establish their own team racing
programs. This is not a “how to,” but rather, the Summit will identify
initiatives that will grow this important segment of our sport at all
levels.
