WALK-INS WELCOME AT NEXT WEEK'S SYMPOSIUMS IN NEW ORLEANS
When US SAILING's National Sailing Programs Symposium and One-Design
Symposium kick off next week in New Orleans, LA, the downtown Marriott where
both events are held will be bubbling with activity. From numerous
educational seminars and several interesting keynote speakers (including
Brad Read of Sail Newport, RI, who'll discuss fleet building through public
access), there'll be plenty of things to learn and people to meet at both
events. If you haven't had the opportunity yet to register for the
Symposiums, not to worry, walk-ins are welcome! TEAM RACING SUMMIT: FEBRUARY 3 IN LARCHMONT, NY
US SAILING’s Team Racing Committee and U.S. Team Racing Championship
Committee are joining forces to create plans and programs that will advance
team racing to the next level in the U.S. All interested parties are invited
to attend, including sailors and team race event managers, umpires, and
representatives from clubs seeking to establish their own team racing
programs. This is not a “how to,” but rather, the Summit will identify
initiatives that will grow this important segment of our sport at all
levels. US SAILING SEEKS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS COACH
US SAILING is looking for a Junior Championships Coach. In this seasonal,
contractual position, the Junior Championships Coach will be responsible for
creating and coordinating a development program for advanced and developing
youth sailors in the U.S. This position may be ideal for a college or high
school sailing coach. RS:X AND 470 NORTH AMERICANS TAKE PLACE THIS WEEKEND
With numerous Olympic class sailors unloading containers and practicing on
the waters of Biscayne Bay, it's clear that US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR is
about to kick off (racing will be held January 22-27). Several Olympic
classes have organized major regattas around the Rolex Miami OCR to create a
winter circuit and make it easier for athletes from the U.S. and abroad to
ship their boats to Miami for the winter months. This weekend, the 470 and
RS:X North Americans will be held, with a lot of Olympic hopefuls in
attendance. POWERBOAT INSTRUCTOR COURSE AT SHAKE-A-LEG MIAMI - FEBRUARY 1-4

MORNING LIGHT CREW TAKES ISAF US SAILING OFFSHORE SAFETY COURSE
The Morning Light sailors who plan to be the youngest crew ever to
sail the Transpacific Yacht Race in July were introduced last week to key
elements of their quest: the boat and an ISAF US SAILING Offshore Safety
Course. The crew is gearing up to compete in the Transpac Race, a race of
2,225 nautical miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu as part of Roy Disney's
documentary film production. Last Wednesday through Friday, the crew learned
the less glamorous but critical procedures from a team led by Chuck Hawley
of West Marine, who has been conducting pre-race seminars for Transpac and
other ocean races for years, along with ABN AMRO Navigator Stan Honey and
North Sails' Fuzz Foster. "Part of what we want to accomplish is the
safety-at-sea business of handling life rafts, man-overboard drills, CPR and
emergency medical procedure," Roy Disney said.
