The coveted Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Trophy

ONE DAY LEFT TO HELP SHAPE SAILING HISTORY

US SAILING members have until Thursday-night 11:59 p.m. Eastern (Nov. 30) to help shape sailing history by making a nomination for US SAILING's Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards. Since US SAILING first created the Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards in 1961, the biggest names in American sailing have been honored with the distinction. Sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. since 1980 and increasingly coveted with time, the awards reward excellence through outstanding on-the-water achievement.

After the nomination period ends, a shortlist of nominees is presented to a panel of noted sailing journalists who discuss the merits of each and vote by secret ballot to determine the award winners. In January 2007, the winners will be announced and presented with the perpetual Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Trophy and a specially engraved Rolex timepiece.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Steve Manson

Steve Manson

Steve Manson has only been sailing for a few years, but it's pretty safe to say that sailing has forever changed his life. Steve was a high school student in Baltimore, MD, when he signed up for a program that ended up taking him to the Downtown Sailing Center, Baltimore's community sailing center, to help clean sailboats and learn to sail. It didn't take long for Steve to develop a passion for the sport and spend as much time as possible on the water. By becoming a sailing instructor at the Center, he was able to share his enthusiasm with others who may not have had an opportunity to spend time on the water if it hadn't been for the Center. When Roy Disney's Morning Light program was taking applications for young sailors to participate in the documentary film about the youngest team ever to compete in the Transpac Race from LA to Honolulu, Steve just knew he had to apply. Since then, he has flown on a plane for the first time in his life (to attend the try-outs in California, paid for by Mr. Disney), met other sailors from around the country with a similar passion for the sport, and has been selected out of over 500 candidates to participate in the Morning Light program. He is now destined to travel and sail even more. Steve's story is an example of what all community sailing centers strive for: reaching out, building character, and helping new sailors help themselves to achieve success in life. Way to go Steve!

RESCUE MEDAL AWARDED TO ATLANTA YACHT CLUB SAILORS

When skipper Clint Hodges went into diabetic shock and fell overboard while racing his Y-Flyer out of Atlanta Yacht Club, GA, his crew Katherine Hallet took quick action by pulling Hodges back on board. Noticing the erratic sailing of the boat, fellow Y-Flyer sailors Robert and Holly Gregory suspected something might be wrong and stepped in to help. Robert boarded the boat, steadied the situation and sailed the boat back to the dock where Clint was given emergency aid and recovered. For their heroic action, Katherine Hallet and Robert & Holly Gregory have received US SAILING's Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal.
