ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
US SAILING TEAM MEMBER PAIGE RAILEY NAMED The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and
Rolex announced US Sailing Team member Paige Railey (Clearwater, FL) as
winner of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award 2006 last Tuesday.
At an awards ceremony in Helsinki, Finland, Railey was honored for her
outstanding sailing achievements between September 1, 2005 and August 31,
2006, when she won a number of major international regattas in the Laser
Radial.
SECOND TIME PAIGE RAILEY IS NAMED US SAILOR OF THE WEEK Because US SAILING is so proud of Paige Railey's
accomplishments and contribution to our sport, this is the second time she
has been named a US SAILOR of the Week. Do you know someone who gives as
much time and energy to building a fleet or running races as they do to
working at the office? Or do you know someone who is newly converted to the
sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How about a junior sailor
whom you have to command to "please step away from the dinghy." We want to
know about them! DATES AND LOCATIONS FOR 2008 OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS ANNOUNCED US SAILING has determined the dates and locations
for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Sailing in the 11 events selected
for the 2008 Olympic Regatta. The sailing events selected for the 2008
Olympic Games are: Finn, Laser Radial, Laser, 470 Men, 470 Women,
49er, RS:X, RS:X, Tornado, Star, and Yngling. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials –
Sailing will be held October 3-14, 2007 in Southern California and Newport,
RI, with the exception of the Yngling class, which has two separate
non-Olympic Trials events. US SAILING has created a qualification system for
the Laser, Laser Radial, and Star events to determine the athletes eligible
to compete in the Trials. WILLIAM PINKNEY TO SPEAK AT NATIONAL SAILING PROGRAMS SYMPOSIUM
Captain William Pinkney, the first African-American to solo-circumnavigate
the globe by going around the tip of Cape Horn, will be a keynote speaker at
the 2007 National Sailing Programs Symposium (January 17-21 in New Orleans).
Combining his interest in sailing with his interest for history,
particularly naval voyages of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, one of Pinkney's adventures was aboard the Freedom Schooner
Amistad. In January 1999, Pinkney and his crew set out to retrace the Middle
Passage slave trade routes. The purpose of the project is to educate people
about the original Amistad, as well as about the slave trade and human
rights. DON'T FORGET: MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND NEXT WEEK'S US SAILING EVENTS
US SAILING has organized an exciting, educational panel on the Volvo Ocean
Race, which will take place on Friday, November 17, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. in
Newport, RI. The panel will be held during US SAILING's Annual Meeting,
which takes place Nov. 15-19. Both events will take place at the Newport
Hyatt Hotel on Goat Island. The panel will consist of Stan Honey, navigator
on the winning team of ABN AMRO One; Ken Read, helmsman and tactician
for Ericsson Racing Team; Jerry Kirby, bowman for Pirates of the
Caribbean; and Jennifer Lilly, the official weather forecaster for the
Volvo Ocean Race. The panel will be moderated by Gary Jobson. U.S. YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER FOR YOUTH WORLDS
The 29er boys' and girls' fleets of the 2007 U.S. Youth Championship (to be
held in June at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans) will be the qualifier
for the 29er events of the 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship.
The 2007 ISAF Youth Worlds will be held in Kingston, Canada July 12-21. The
'07 U.S. Youth Champs will be raced in Lasers, Laser Radials, Club 420s and
29ers. Competitors are selected by resume with no pre-determined fleet size.
With only 150 sailors in all four fleets combined, competition will be every
tough. The U.S. Youth Championship is the premier sailing regatta for youth
sailors in the U.S. Applications will open in early January and will close
at midnight Eastern on March 15th. SPINNAKER SAILING - GET THE SCOOP FROM A WORLD-RENOWNED RACER
LIFESLING OWNERS TAKE NOTICE A lot of thought can go into making a better
mousetrap. Thanks to the Bonnell Cove Foundation's Suddenly Along Seminar,
a list of improvements you can make to your Lifesling to make it more
efficient has been made available. US SAILING's Safety at Sea Committee has
posted this list on its website. The posting also includes a list of things
to put in your mind in the event you end up on the wrong end of the
Lifesling - overboard.
