Paige Railey at Tuesday's awards ceremony in Helsinki, Finland

US SAILING TEAM MEMBER PAIGE RAILEY NAMED
ISAF ROLEX WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and Rolex announced US Sailing Team member Paige Railey (Clearwater, FL) as winner of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award 2006 last Tuesday. At an awards ceremony in Helsinki, Finland, Railey was honored for her outstanding sailing achievements between September 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006, when she won a number of major international regattas in the Laser Radial.
This is the second consecutive year that Paige Railey was nominated for the female ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Railey, who is 19 years old, has proven herself as the sailor to beat in the Laser Radial.
In her acceptance speech, Railey thanked her family, coach, and training partner. She also thanked US SAILING "for all the excellent work they're doing on behalf of sailors like me."

US SAILOR Of The Week
Paige Railey

Paige Railey

On behalf of all US SAILING members, we heartily congratulate Paige Railey on winning the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award. This is only the second time the award has been given to an American and we believe Paige is the youngest recipient in its history. Paige is a great ambassador for the sport and our country. We are very proud to know that her long list of career wins includes US SAILING’s U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship (3 times no less) and that she is a member of the US Sailing Team. She is an incredible role model for young sailors, not just because of her success, but also because of her work ethic and attitude. President Janet Baxter was at the awards ceremony on Tuesday in Helsinki and said that Paige "was very gracious and we are all extremely proud of her accomplishments on and off the water." Like many of her peers, Paige’s sailing journey has only just begun and given her talent and dedication, more is sure to come.

SECOND TIME PAIGE RAILEY IS NAMED US SAILOR OF THE WEEK

Because US SAILING is so proud of Paige Railey's accomplishments and contribution to our sport, this is the second time she has been named a US SAILOR of the Week. Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? Or do you know someone who is newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the dinghy." We want to know about them!
> E-mail e-USSAILING's editors at eussailing@ussailing.org with a photo of that sailor and 100 words of background info. WILLIAM PINKNEY TO SPEAK AT NATIONAL SAILING PROGRAMS SYMPOSIUM

Captain William Pinkney, the first African-American to solo-circumnavigate the globe by going around the tip of Cape Horn, will be a keynote speaker at the 2007 National Sailing Programs Symposium (January 17-21 in New Orleans). Combining his interest in sailing with his interest for history, particularly naval voyages of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, one of Pinkney's adventures was aboard the Freedom Schooner Amistad. In January 1999, Pinkney and his crew set out to retrace the Middle Passage slave trade routes. The purpose of the project is to educate people about the original Amistad, as well as about the slave trade and human rights.
