MARTIN 242 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION WINS U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP OF CHAMPIONS

The last day of the U.S. Championship of Champions at Grande Maumelle Sailing Club in Little Rock, AR, last Saturday determined a new U.S. Champion of Champions. The title now belongs to Alan Field, the Martin 242 North American Champion from Los Angeles, and crew Steven Hunt (San Diego, CA). Augie Barkow (Pewaukee, WI), C-Scow National Champion, had been in the lead since day one, but when he finished 15, 13, 11 in races 9, 10 and 11 respectively on the last day of the regatta, the lead was up for grabs. Field and Hunt were happy to step up, winning races 10 and 11. From then on, their lead was sealed and with a pair of fifth place finishes in the regatta's two last races, the title was theirs. Barkow ended up finishing third overall, behind Matt Burridge (St. Louis, MO), Lightning North American Champion, who posted some solid top ten finishes including a pair of firsts in races 9 and 13 to finish second overall.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Drew Daugherty

Drew Daugherty

Drew Daugherty has been a sailor all of his life. The funny thing about that is that he's lived in Little Rock, Arkansas all of his life (except for a few years when he moved away for college). So, in case you were wondering: yes, there is sailing in Little Rock. For the past few months, Drew has been dedicating all his free time (and more!) to getting his hometown club, Grande Maumelle Sailing Club, ready to host a national championship, the U.S. Championship of Champions. The event went off without a hitch last weekend, mostly thanks to Drew's hard work and experience: he's been a two-time participant in the Championship himself. Drew not only knows how to run an event, he also knows how to win an event: he has won the Y-Flyer National Championship twice (after finishing in second place for three consecutive years). So he travels everywhere with his Y-Flyer. "And I've never driven home from a regatta wishing I hadn't gone," he says. Drew comes from a sailing family, his dad was one of the founding members and the first Commodore of Grande Maumelle Sailing Club, which is located on Lake Maumelle, the water reservoir for Little Rock (so there's no swimming allowed!). Meanwhile, Drew is passing along his family's passion for the sport to his young son. Thanks Drew!
