FAMILIAR AND NEW FACES AT THE US SAILING PRE-TRIALS

Race organizers and athletes were put to the test over the weekend at US SAILING’s Olympic and Paralympic Pre-Trials held in Newport, RI and San Diego, CA. The events are considered test events for race organizers to prepare for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Trials at the same time next year and for athletes to get accustomed to local conditions, race areas, and facilities. Taking a quick look at the weekend’s winners show some familiar as well as new faces, ranging from Athens silver medalists John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree winning the Tornado Pre-Trials, to Mark Lewis and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker winning the new Paralympic class SKUD-18. The Rhode Island Sailing Foundation, supported by Sail Newport, New York Yacht Club, and Ida Lewis Yacht Club, hosted the US SAILING Pre-Trials in the Laser and Laser Radial, as well as the Paralympic classes 2.4mR, SKUD-18, and Sonar. Meanwhile, in California, San Diego Yacht Club hosted the US SAILING Pre-Trials in the Tornado class.
Final results:
Laser: Andrew Campbell; Laser Radial: Anna Tunnicliffe; 2.4mR: Tom Brown; SKUD-18: Mark Lewis and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker; Sonar: Rick Doerr, Timothy Angle and Bill Donahue; Tornado: John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree.

> The US SAILING Pre-Trials will continue this weekend (Oct. 20-22) in California when the 49ers compete at Southwestern Yacht Club in San Diego, the Finns at Newport Harbor Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and the Stars at California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey). The Pre-Trials will finish Oct. 26-29 with four days of racing for the men's and women's 470s at the US Sailing Center in Long Beach and the men's and women's Neil Pryde RS:X at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. US SAILOR Of The Week
Jennifer Lilly

Jennifer Lilly

Jennifer Lilly has a dream job. She travels across the globe and earns a living doing weather forecasting for sailors. Recently, she traveled to Qingdao, China, to forecast the weather for the members of the US Sailing Team. Among her long list of regattas she’s been involved in is also the Volvo Ocean Race. For Jennifer, anything that has to do with sailing and maritime history has always been a passion. A sailor since she was two years old when she went cruising with her parents on their J/30, by the time she joined the sailing team at Connecticut College she already had a lot of sailing experience, including two Marion-Bermuda races. She continued that passion in college, working at Mystic Seaport every summer and completing the Williams-Mystic maritime studies semester. After college, she sailed on the Eagle through the Panama Canal, then packed her bags and moved to Canada to earn her Master's degree from McGill University's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. Chris Bedford at Sailing Weather Services quickly recognized Jennifer’s passion and intelligence and she has now been working with Chris for over two years. “I love it,” she says with enthusiasm in her voice. Great job, Jennifer!

GET THE EDGE IN SPORTS PARENTING

A practical, provocative, and comprehensive guide for parents who want to ensure that their children get the most out of all their sports experiences, The Sports Parenting Edge takes a fresh, resolutely positive approach to a popular subject. Parents and coaches today, claims author Rick Wolff, do not want to be lectured anymore about the problems inherent in youth sports. Rather, they want to learn how to work around the pitfalls of out-of-control parents, how to deal with win-at-all-costs coaches, and in short, how to make certain that their children enjoy sports and have the opportunity to develop their full athletic potential.
> Get the The Sports Parenting Edge through the US SAILING store at http://store.ussailing.org. $17.50 for US SAILING members, $19.95 for non-members.

HOLIDAY SEASON IS QUICKLY APPROACHING
