ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
NOMINATIONS NOW ACCEPTED FOR US SAILING'S ROLEX YACHTSMAN AND YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS Throughout the busy 2006 sailing season, many U.S.
sailors have achieved impressive regatta results at home and abroad.
Starting today, US SAILING is accepting nominations for its Rolex Yachtsman
and Yachtswoman of the Year awards, considered the highest individual
sailing honors in the country. Through November 30, 2006, US SAILING members
can nominate the male and female sailors who they think have turned in the
most outstanding performances on the water in this calendar year and have
earned their places in the history books. US SAILING's Rolex Yachtsman and
Yachtswoman of the Year Awards are presented annually to the individual U.S.
sailors who demonstrate excellence through outstanding on-the-water
achievement at national and/or international events during the calendar
year.
SCOTT YOUNG WINS FIFTH U.S. MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Scott Young (Austin, TX) knows a thing or two about
competing in and winning a US SAILING National Championship, he has done it
many times before. Last Friday at Boston Yacht Club, Young won his fifth
U.S. Men’s Championship title, a feat no other sailor has accomplished
before in the event’s 54-year history. This is the third time Young won the
event as a skipper (which has been done before) and he also won it twice as
crew. His crew of John Morran and Douglas Kern aren't new to the
Championship either, previously winning the event with Young in 1987 (Kern
also won it with Young in 1985). Young has won two other US SAILING National
Championship titles in his sailing career: as a youth sailor, he won the
U.S. Junior Doublehanded Championship (Bemis Trophy) in 1975 and the U.S.
Junior Singlehanded Championship (Smythe Trophy) in 1976. RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINARS IN NEWPORT, RI, BEFORE ANNUAL MEETING US SAILING has lined up a Basic Race Management
Seminar as well as an Advanced Race Management to take place just before the
Annual Meeting in Newport, RI, in mid-November. The Basic Race Management
Seminar takes place November 15 at the Newport Hyatt on Goat Island, which
is also where the Annual Meeting will kick off the next morning. The
Advanced Race Management Seminar will be at the Seaman's Church Institute in
downtown Newport November 14 & 15. PLAN AHEAD FOR THE IRC EAST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP With a busy summer sailing season wrapping up for US
SAILING’s offshore department, the next event they’re focusing on is the IRC
East Coast Championship. The event will be held at the Storm Trysail Club -
Chesapeake Station November 3-5 and serve as a warm-up to the U.S. IRC
Nationals, which will be sailed as part of the Storm Trysail Club's Block
Island Race Week XXII presented by Rolex on June 17-22, 2007. BIG US SAILING TEAM PRESENCE AT STAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP All of the members of the US Sailing Team in the
Star class, as well as numerous past US Sailing Team members, are competing
in the upcoming Star World Championship, which starts this weekend and runs
through October 6 at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, CA. The list
of entries from around the world is impressive and promises very exciting
racing. QUALIFIERS FOR 2007 US YOUTH WORLD TEAM ANNOUNCED US SAILING has announced the qualifying events for
the 2007 US Youth World Team, which will represent the U.S. at the 2007
Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF (International Sailing Federation) World
Championships. Open to sailors who will not turn 19 in 2007, the Youth World
Championships feature competition in five events: Hobie 16 (open multihull),
Laser (boys singlehanded), Laser Radial (girls singlehanded), Neil Pryde
RS:X (boys and girls boardsailing), and 29er (boys and girls doublehanded).
The 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships will be held July
12-21 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. REGISTER NOW AS A SAILOR ATHLETE If you are an active racer and you care about the
future of our sport, you should be registered as a Sailor Athlete at US
SAILING. As a registered Sailor Athlete, you will get a voice in the Sailor
Athlete Council (SAC), the only vehicle for an individual or group of
individuals to be heard as individuals, not as members of an organization.
Much of the representation at US SAILING is organized around a class, a
regional Yacht Racing Association, or a racing discipline (such as team
racing) and the SAC's responsibility is to represent the individual athlete.
There is no cost associated with this and the benefits are great. As a
registered athlete (level A or B), you will be eligible to be nominated for
a position on the SAC (nominations for these positions will open from
October 6-20). CY GILLETTE PASSES - 1995 RECIPIENT OF HERRESHOFF TROPHY US SAILING lost a great sailor, mentor and friend
recently when Cy Gillette of Honolulu, HI, passed away. Cy had been involved
in yacht racing almost all of his 92 years, beginning in his home state of
Michigan, and then as a leading figure of the sport in Hawaii since the end
of World War II. The list of programs and events Cy was involved in is
endless, from America's Cup and Congressional Cup to TransPac and numerous
other regattas. Cy received US SAILING's Herreshoff Trophy in 1995 for his
tremendous commitment to our sport. He was PREPARE FOR YOUR NEXT SAILBOAT CRUISE WITH WORLD CRUISING ESSENTIALS
DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK? Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is
always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect
cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is
newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How
about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the
dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a
fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know
about them!
