ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
SODARO DOMINATES U.S. WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP It was a Californian sweep at the end of the U.S.
Women's Championship, hosted by Edgewater Yacht Club and sailed in J/24s, as
the team of Vicki Sodaro (Tiburon, CA), Stephanie Wondolleck (San Rafael,
CA), Karina Vogen Shelton (Watsonville, CA), and Emily French (Santa Cruz,
CA) representing Northern California won the title to take home US SAILING's
Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy. This was the second time for Sodaro to
win the Adams Cup (she also won it in 2002), one of the oldest women's
sports trophies in the U.S.
PRINTED BALLOTS FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS NOW AVAILABLE For the first time in the history of US SAILING,
members can now elect the members of US SAILING's Board of Directors. The
election process officially kicked off this week with printed ballots now
being accepted via fax and regular mail at US SAILING. The deadline to get
your printed ballot to US SAILING is November 8. Starting October 19, US
SAILING members will also be able to vote online instead of via printed
ballot. NOMINATIONS ACCEPTED FOR TIMMY LARR TROPHY FOR SAILING EDUCATION With US SAILING's Annual Meeting quickly approaching
(Nov. 15-19), sailors have just a few more weeks to make a nomination for US
SAILING's Timmy Larr Trophy, which recognizes a person whose vision and
guidance have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of sailor
education in the U.S. The trophy, which will be awarded at the Annual
Meeting's Awards dinner on Saturday November 18, is the highest honor for
sailor education. Nominees for the award should be members of US SAILING and
embody the
highest principles of honor, integrity and a selfless dedication to the
sport. US SAILING TEAM ATHLETES COMPETING IN INTERNATIONAL EVENTS THIS WEEK > The Laser World Championship finished in Korea
on Wednesday. US Sailing Team members Andrew Campbell and Brad Funk
competed in the event and finished in 44th and 55th place respectively in
the 128-boat fleet. For complete results, visit
http://www.laserworld2006.com. RACING STARTS TODAY AT U.S. MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP Nine out of eleven teams made it out to the practice
line in Marblehead, MA, on Tuesday to fine-tune themselves and the boats for
Wednesday’s start of the U.S. Men’s Championship, hosted by Boston Yacht
Club in Marblehead, MA. The other teams worked among themselves practicing
in the Sonars that have been overhauled and outfitted with all new sails for
the week’s racing. “We had the ideal Marblehead conditions we always talk
about, but don’t always get,” said Geoff Smith, Boston Yacht Club’s Race
Committee Chairman and Event Chair. The 10-knot breeze was steady and it got
the sailors excited to go head to head today through Friday, as race
organizers plan to complete 15 races in three days. ENHANCE YOUR RACING SKILLS WITH THIS CD NOW AVAILABLE AT US SAILING

will take place November 7-11 at Newport Harbor Yacht Club in California. US
SAILING's Match Racing Committee recently announced that the event will also
be a qualifier for the 2007 Mayor's Cup, an ISAF Grade 2 event sailed in
Catalina 37s at Long Beach Yacht Club July 18-21, 2007. The winner of the
U.S. Women's Match Racing Championship will be invited to compete in the
Mayor's Cup. PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM TRIALS FOR SUNFISH THIS WEEKEND Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point, NY, is opening
its doors this week for Sunfish sailors hoping to qualify for the 2007 Pan
American Games Team in the Sunfish. The qualifying event runs from September 21 to 24.
The 2007 Pan American Games will be held July 13-29 in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK? Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is
always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect
cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is
newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How
about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the
dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a
fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know
about them!
