Fierce competition at the 2005
U.S. Team Racing Championship

ENTRY LIST FOR U.S. TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIP PROMISES TOUGH COMPETITION

A total of 90 sailors are lined up to compete in the U.S. Team Racing Championship for US SAILING’s Hinman Trophy, kicking off with racing on Friday, September 8 and running through Sunday, September 10 at San Diego Yacht Club in California. With an average age of 24, a closer look at the wide range of backgrounds of the competitors at this National Championship offers insight to the popularity of this type of sailboat racing in the U.S. From world champions to local club champions and high school athletes, the competition promises to be intense because there is even more than a National Championship title at stake: the top six finishing teams at the regatta will qualify to compete in the U.S. qualifier for the 2007 ISAF World Team Racing Championship. Sailed on Vanguard 15s, the U.S. Team Racing Championship is sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. Inc., Nautica, Vanguard Sailboats, and Dry Creek Vineyard.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Bryan McDonald

Bryan McDonald

Californian Bryan McDonald loves being a certified sailing judge and umpire. Not only because he gets a kick out of knowing the racing rules inside-out (he has a copy of the rules on his Palm Pilot), but also because it offers a front row seat to watch the racing up close. With a day job as Hardware Engineering Manager at Apple Computer, Bryan dedicates much of his free time to sailing wearing many different hats, as a judge, umpire, member of US SAILING's Appeals Committee and as a sailor (he was the 2005 U.S. National Windsurfing Champion in the Prodigy Masters Division). One of the things he likes best is umpiring at team racing events. "Team racing is very fast," he says. "More stuff happens before the first mark in team racing than any other type of racing." This weekend, you'll find Bryan umpiring at the U.S. Team Racing Championship in San Diego carrying his trusted Palm Pilot with the racing rules, just in case, and a bag of gummy bears to help him stay focused. Good luck out there, Bryan!
