USA JUNIOR OLYMPIC SAILING FESTIVAL QUALIFIES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN TEAMS FOR US SAILING'S CHUBB JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Long Beach, CA - When Southern California's version of US SAILING's Junior Olympics Sailing Festival gasped its last breath out of a wind-killing heat wave last Sunday, it was a relief for some sailors and a disappointment for others. On the final day, 117 competitors on 88 boats in four classes waited nearly three hours for any kind of wind to arrive in a venue noted for its fresh summer sea breeze. Tyler Sinks and crew Benjamin Todter of San Diego Yacht Club squeezed out their sixth win in eight races over three days, and Willy Peterson and Ryann Hall of California Yacht Club finished fifth for second placed overall - both teams thus qualifying for US SAILING's Chubb U.S. Junior Singlehanded and Doublehanded Championships for the Bemis and Smythe trophies, respectively, at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club in Kemah, TX, Aug. 8-13. The Lasers and Laser Radials weren't able to get a race in on the final day. That non-result punched tickets to Texas for Charlie Buckingham of Newport Harbor Yacht Club and Caleb Paine of San Diego's Southwestern Yacht Club for their 1-2 finishes in the Laser class.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Karl Kleinschrodt

Karl Kleinschrodt

What do you do when you've been a sailor through high school and are about to go to a college that doesn't have a sailing team? You do exactly what Karl Kleinschrodt did. This Mobile, Alabama, native and sailor since he was born, hit the ground running when he entered the University of Southern Alabama. In a matter of months, Karl put together a competitive sailing team, began fundraising to purchase boats, and secured a sailing location for the team to use. Now, just a few years later, the team is a proud owner of eight FJs and a Yankee 38. Under Karl's leadership, the University of Southern Alabama has become a force to be reckoned with on the national college sailing circuit. Now that he's getting ready to graduate, he doesn't need to worry about the future of his team: his younger brother Paul will be taking over the reigns. But don't think Karl will be out of the picture, he'll still go sailing with the team for fun. "What else am I going to do after work?"
