ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
USA JUNIOR OLYMPIC SAILING FESTIVAL QUALIFIES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN TEAMS FOR US SAILING'S CHUBB JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Long Beach, CA - When Southern California's
version of US SAILING's Junior Olympics Sailing Festival gasped its last
breath out of a wind-killing heat wave last Sunday, it was a relief for some
sailors and a disappointment for others. On the final day, 117 competitors
on 88 boats in four classes waited nearly three hours for any kind of wind
to arrive in a venue noted for its fresh summer sea breeze. Tyler Sinks and
crew Benjamin Todter of San Diego Yacht Club squeezed out their sixth win in
eight races over three days, and Willy Peterson and Ryann Hall of California
Yacht Club finished fifth for second placed overall - both teams thus
qualifying for US SAILING's Chubb U.S. Junior Singlehanded and Doublehanded
Championships for the Bemis and Smythe trophies, respectively, at Texas
Corinthian Yacht Club in Kemah, TX, Aug. 8-13. The Lasers and Laser Radials
weren't able to get a race in on the final day. That non-result punched
tickets to Texas for Charlie Buckingham of Newport Harbor Yacht Club and
Caleb Paine of San Diego's Southwestern Yacht Club for their 1-2 finishes in
the Laser class.

Since the program was created in 2005, US SAILING's Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series events have successfully connected all types of sailors to the well-known personalities that have shaped our sport into what it is today. The 18 events held in the 2006 Speaker Series season, January through May, attracted over 2,500 sailors. U.S. TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIP APPLICATIONS CLOSE JULY 29
