US SAILOR Of The Week
Macho Slavich

Macho Slavich

Macho Slavich, who was born in Croatia but calls New Orleans his home, learned to sail in his thirties in big boats. He started off by sailing on a 50-foot PHRF cruiser and has since sailed in everything from a J/130 and Irwin 31 to his own beloved S2 7.9. He fell in love the sport and the racing crowd and truly enjoys cruising the Gulf Coast and lake area around New Orleans. A funny thing happened though when he was watching the Finn sailors in the last Olympic Games: this big boat sailor who had never sailed in dinghies got charged up to start a local Finn fleet. After picking up the pieces post-hurricane Katrina (where he stayed behind and helped rescue friends and neighbors), he’s back re-building his Finn fleet. Macho jokes about “going backwards” in sailing, that is, starting in big boats and moving toward dinghies and adds, “Maybe in a year or two, I’ll be in an Opti. Does anyone know if there is a Gray Fleet?” In his spare time, he's also working to help create a new sailing center for the City of New Orleans.

US SAILING TEAM-MEMBER GEOFF EWENSON IS ON A ROLL IN THE FINN CLASS

US Sailing Team-member Geoff Ewenson (Annapolis, MD) is on a roll right now after winning two major Finn regattas this month. Ewenson's impressive wins came at the Finn North American Championship (held in Toronto, Canada) and this past weekend at the Finn National Championship (held in Falmouth, MA). The National Championship was a hard-fought affair as Ewenson finished only one point ahead of Darrell Peck (Gresham, OR) while Bryan Boyd (Annapolis, MD) finished third. Looking ahead, the Finn Class has a number of events throughout the rest of the summer, including the Finn Gold Cup in July in Croatia, while gearing up for the Pre-Trials, October 20-22 in Newport Beach, CA.

QUALIFYING EVENTS FOR 2007 PAN AMERICAN GAMES DETERMINED

BUSY SEASON FOR SAILING WORLD LANDS' END NOOD REGATTAS

June is a busy month for Sailing World's Lands' End NOOD Regattas, sanctioned by US SAILING. Last weekend, the Chicago NOOD celebrated 228 boats, three days, 190 races (more than 43,000 individual finishes recorded), and winds that never dipped below 10 knots—the stats that make this year's edition of the Lands' End Chicago NOOD Regatta one of the best in its 15 years. This coming weekend, all eyes will be turning to Toronto for the next Lands' End NOOD on the calendar.

DO YOU KNOW A US SAILOR OF THE WEEK?

Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect cruising lunch spot? Or do you know someone who is newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know about them!
