US SAILOR Of The Week
Malin Burnham

Malin Burnham

Malin Burnham is one of "America’s great sailors" in an all-encompassing meaning of the word. He has competed and won at the highest levels of the sport – a Star Class World Champion and the head of the victorious Stars & Stripes America’s Cup campaign bringing the Cup back to the U.S. He organized and managed the successful defense of the Cup in 1992. His involvement and support of the sport at all levels from junior programs at the San Diego Yacht Club to Olympic Classes and the America’s Cup has set great standards of commitment. Having seen so many successful campaigns from start-up to success, Malin knows firsthand how vital early preparation and training is and quickly became one of the first Gold Medalist supporters of our US Sailing Team. He has recently joined the committee to help raise more funds to ensure proper resources to prepare our Team for the 2008 Olympic Games. Thank you Malin!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE US SAILING TEAM?

Looking at where some of the world's major regattas are happening right now, that's where you'll find the athletes of the US Sailing Team: from Annapolis, MD, to Denmark and the Netherlands, the US Sailing Team is there. After the World Sailing Games wrapped up in Austria, many Team-members packed their bags, loaded up their cars, and headed to Medemblik, the Netherlands, to compete in the Holland Regatta. Ten teams from the USA will compete in the event, which runs from May 24 to 28. While many US Sailing Team-members are in Holland, numerous of the Team's Star sailors are Annapolis, MD, to compete in the Star Western Hemisphere Championship. Meanwhile, in Denmark, Sally Barkow is defending her Women's Match Racing World Champion title. One of the sailors she'll face on the race course is USA's Betsy Alison.

U.S. OLYMPIC COMMITTEE FEATURES NICK SCANDONE FOR ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

The U.S. Olympic Committee recently selected to highlight Nick Scandone - US Disabled Sailing Team-member and 2005 US SAILING Rolex Yachtsman of the Year - for its weekly Athlete Spotlight. Below is an excerpt with a link to the complete story:
"Sport is consumed on many differing levels. From spectators to participants, first-timers to professionals, the weekend warriors to the casual players, whatever your personal level of involvement with sport contains, for certain individuals sport is a way of life. For Nick Scandone (Fountain Valley, Calif.), the sport of sailing is much more than that, it's a lifeline. In 2002, Scandone's life, and sailing, would begin to take on new meaning after he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or what is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease."
