ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
A TALE OF TWO CLASSES - RHODES BANTAM AND THISTLE - ARTICLE FROM CLASS MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK Some surprising lessons can be learned from two
similar one-design classes with dissimilar fates. Life and death is what
this story is about: the death of a one-design sailboat called the Rhodes
Bantam, and the life of another boat called the Thistle. A one-design class
is made up of people; like them, it is mortal. The Bantam "lived" for 30
years, a better than average life span for a one design, yet the Thistle has
lived longer. Why?
RESCUE MEDAL AWARDED TO CLUB NAUTIQUE BASIC CRUISING COURSE US SAILING recently awarded its Arthur B. Hanson
Rescue Medal to Club Nautique's Basic Cruising Instructor Dave Scott and
students Denise Allard and Martin Jakob. The medal was awarded based on an
event that took place last January, when a Basic Cruising Class underway on
Richardson Bay, an arm of San Francisco Bay, heard the screams of a sailor
who had landed in the water after his boat capsized. The instructor and his
students responded quickly, helping to quickly and safely recover the sailor
in distress. BOAT U.S. SAFE BOATING WEEK MAY 20-26 - TAKE FREE ONLINE COURSE A lot of sailors have years of practical experience
spent on the water. But are you sure you know everything there is to know
about staying safe while boating? In conjunction with National Safe Boating
Week from May 20 to May 26, the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and
Clean Water challenges all boaters to test their boating knowledge with a
free, online safety course. The course covers a broad range of topics for
both sailors and powerboaters. The course is accepted by many states as a
certified boating safety course. USA SAILORS QUALIFY FOR MEDAL ROUNDS AT ISAF WORLD SAILING GAMES Several USA sailors have come on strong at the ISAF
World Sailing Games, currently taking place on Lake Neusiedl in Austria.
After five days of qualifying races, the sailors have moved into medal rounds,
which will end this Saturday with the determination of ten new World
Champions. At press time, USA sailors are demonstrating once again that they
are a force to be reckoned with, as several USA teams currently occupy the
top spot in their fleets. TEAM RACING: A GAME WHOSE TIME HAS COME
"Explain to someone who doesn't sail what goes through a skipper's mind on
the race course and you'll be reminded how intellectually complex sailboat
racing is. While racers think about trimming sails, choreographing crew
maneuvers, local weather, and the fluid dynamics of how wind bends around
sails and land masses and other boats, they are making wagers on the water
against opponents whose behavior is calculated at best, unpredictable at
worst. The best racers are a rare breed: maestros at boat handling with a
gambler's soul. Import those skills into team racing and the game inflates
to three dimensions. Sailing is no longer a linear game of going fast and
finishing first." TEAM RACING RESOURCES AVAILABLE THROUGH US SAILING
The landscape of team racing is changing and gaining momentum in certain
regions of the country. If you're thinking about trying team racing, there's
a wealth of information on team racing on the US SAILING website at RANKING SYSTEM DETERMINED FOR 2007 US DISABLED SAILING TEAM
US SAILING has determined the ranking system for the 2007 US Disabled
Sailing Team. The US Disabled Sailing Team annually recognizes the top three
ranked competitors in the classes selected for the Paralympic Games, based
on athletes’ performances at a series of qualifying regattas. The 2007
ranking system identifies three qualifying events for each Paralympic class.
US SAILING’s Pre-Trials and 2007 Rolex Miami OCR are two mandatory events
for all classes. The classes currently selected for the 2008 Paralympic
Games are the 2.4 Metre (Open Singlehanded), the SKUD-18 (Open
Doublehanded), and the Sonar (Open Triplehanded). NOTICE OF RACE FOR PRE-TRIALS NOW AVAILABLE The Notices of Race for the Pre-Trials for all
Olympic and Paralympic events are now available on the events' website. The
Pre-Trials will be held in October this year. US SAILING, together with six
host Yacht Clubs from around the country, is organizing the Pre-Trials as
preliminary events for both sailors and organizers, as both prepare for the
2007 Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials, scheduled for October 2007 at the
same venues. Several of these Pre-Trial events will also serve as Trials to
select the U.S. Team for the Pan American Games. APPLICATIONS FOR U.S. OFFSHORE CHAMPIONSHIP NOW ACCEPTED
