ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN SAILING
May 10, 2006

Nearly 5,000 young sailors are expected to get on the water this year through the JOs

2006 CALENDAR FOR USA JUNIOR OLYMPIC SAILING FESTIVALS ANNOUNCED

US SAILING has determined the 2006 schedule of its USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival program (JO) schedule. The schedule boasts 25 events being held at sailing organizations across the country starting in May and wrapping up the season in December with the largest event, the “Orange Bowl” in Miami, Fla., which in 2005 saw more than 680 competitors. In sailboat racing, it’s important to get a good start—not just on the starting line, but as a young sailor. US SAILING’s JO program is designed to do just that: help young sailors between the ages of 8 and 21 get more experience on the water while having fun participating in clinics and regattas. The program, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has had a tremendous impact on the growth of youth sailing, proven by the growing popularity of the program.

US SAILOR Of The Week
Urban Miyares

Urban Miyares right after completing the 2005 Transpac in Waikiki

If you ever get a chance to meet Urban Miyares, you’ll probably say to yourself afterwards, “I’ll never meet another guy like him.” Urban, of San Diego, CA, learned to sail when he was 7 years old. Now pushing 60, Urban’s got many stories to tell and a very impressive sailing resume. A Vietnam veteran, he has lost his eye-sight, has diabetes, is hearing impaired, had a kidney transplant 2 years ago, and has nerve damage in both legs; and the guy has finished 2 Transpacs and about ten Newport-Ensenada Races in recent years. Co-founder of Challenged America, a successful adaptive sailing program headquartered in San Diego, Urban is passionate about sailing for a good reason. He says that sailing is the only sport where disabled athletes can be on the starting line with able-bodied athletes and beat them. Don’t be surprised to see him sailing around the world nonstop by himself one of these days, it’s been his dream since he was a kid.

PRESIDENT'S CLUB-MEMBERS ENJOY CLOSE LOOK AT VOLVO OCEAN RACE

US SAILING's President's Club, consisting of many of US SAILING's major supporters, got a close look at the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) this past weekend, spending their annual event in Annapolis, MD, to get an up-close look at the spectacular stopover for this race. The President's Club admired the record-breaking boats from the deck of the Presidential Yacht Sequoia, the Annapolis Yacht Club, and on board the Pirates of the Caribbean with manager Kimo Worthington as their guide. Guest speaker Chris Larson talked to the Club about his previous VOR experiences aboard Assa Abloy, followed by a relaxing dinner with guests Stan Honey (ABN AMRO One). The President's Club watched the start of Leg 6 to New York City on Sunday from the deck of past US SAILING President Jim Muldoon's Donnybrook among thousands other vessels.

RACE MANAGEMENT ERRORS AND OMISSIONS COVERAGE NOW AVAILABLE

The race went well enough: No collisions, steady breeze throughout, and a member of the club won. But wait! A visiting sailor who was disqualified by the race committee for a premature start is filing suit against the club, claiming that bias of the race committee cost him the points needed for qualification in the class championship this year. The suit is for $1 million. Enter Race Management Errors and Omissions coverage, available as part of the Burgee Program’s comprehensive insurance protection. Specifically designed for sailing organizations, Burgee Forefront for Yacht Clubs provides coverage for wrongful acts or decisions by race management as well as Directors and Officers protection and Employment Practices Liability insurance.

Who is the most passionate sailor you know? Who is always on the water, taking every rules quiz or searching for that perfect cruising lunch spot? Who do you know who has dreams about a well executed jibe-set or a maintenance-free roller furler. Or do you know someone who is newly converted to the sport and soaking up information like a sponge? How about a junior sailor whom you have to command to "please step away from the dinghy." Do you know someone who gives as much time and energy to building a fleet or running races as they do to working at the office? We want to know about them!
