ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE
IN SAILING
2006 US SAILING TEAM ANNOUNCED US SAILING has announced the members of the 2006 US
Sailing Team. The US Sailing Team annually recognizes the top-five ranked
sailors in each of the boat-classes selected for the next Olympic regatta.
The US Sailing Team was created in 1986 to recruit and develop top sailors
in the country for upcoming Olympic Games. For the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing, China, those classes are: 49er, 470 (Men and Women), Finn, Laser,
Laser Radial, RS:X (Men and Women), Star, Tornado, and Yngling.
The 2006 US Sailing Team is coached by High
Performance Director and Head Coach Gary Bodie (Hampton, Va.), and Olympic
Coaches Luther Carpenter (Laporte, TX) and Skip Whyte (Wickford, R.I.).
Sponsors of the 2006 US Sailing Team are Rolex Watch U.S.A., Vanguard
Sailboats, Nautica, Gill, Zodiac of North America, Vineyard Vines, Sperry
Top-Sider, Nikon, Harken, Extrasport, New England Ropes, and Team McLube.
US SAILING REVAMPS AND UPGRADES SMALL BOAT LEVEL 2 COACH WORKSH0P US SAILING has recently revamped and upgraded its
Small Boat Level 2 Coach Workshop. The two-day workshop, which certifies
Level 1 Instructors as coaches, is designed to provide instructors/coaches
with information on how to effectively develop performance boat handling and
racing skills and to instill in athletes the importance of ethical behavior
and sportsmanship in the sport of sailing. Spearheaded by world-famous
sailor and coach Betsy Alison, topics covered in the program include
performance boathandling, on-water skill development, race training drills,
tactics and strategies, the racing rules, program planning, coaching theory
and effective communication. Under the new program, on-site testing has been
eliminated and replaced by an online exam. Attendance is open to anyone, but
only instructors with current Level 1 certification can get the Level 2
Coach certification.
CALLING ALL PASSIONATE SAILORS FOR US SAILOR OF THE WEEK FEATURE If you are a passionate sailor - no matter if you're a weekend warrior, a middle-of-the-fleet racer, a daysailor, or a US SAILING certified instructor - e-mail e-USSAILING's editors at eussailing@ussailing.org with your photo and 100 words of background info on why you enjoy sailing. Past featured US SAILORS of the Week can also be viewed at http://www.ussailing.org/News/Sailor_of_the_Week/index.asp. YNGLING SAILORS BARKOW, HOWE, AND CAPOZZI WIN IN SPAIN US Sailing Team-members Sally Barkow (Nashotah,
Wis.), Carrie Howe (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport,
N.Y.) kicked off their European sailing season with a major win last Friday
at the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The reigning
Yngling World Champions had one mission going into today’s final medal race
in the Yngling class: finishing ahead of the British team led by Sarah Ayton,
who was just two points behind when the teams got on the water this morning.
The USA team, which won the Women’s World Match Racing Championship last
year, used its match racing skills to cover the British team, crossing the
finish line two spots ahead of Ayton. US SAILING TEAM-MEMBERS HEAD TO FRANCE FOR OLYMPIC SAILING WEEK Many US Sailing Team-members are now in Hyères,
France, to compete in French Olympic Sailing Week, held April 22-28
featuring racing in most Olympic classes. U.S. sailors competing in the
event are: 470 Men - Anderson-Mitterling/Hughes and McNay/Biehl; 470 Women -
Clark/Mergenthaler; Laser - Funk; Laser Radial - Railey and Tunnicliffe;
RS:X Women - Hall; Yngling - Barkow/Howe/Capozzi. AVAILABLE THROUGH US SAILING - ELECTRONIC YACHTMASTER DVD
The Electronic Yachtmaster DVD is shot at sea aboard Tom Cunliffe’s
traditional gaff cutter. Cunliffe has integrated electronics with salty,
time-honored techniques to help you shape up with confidence if your boat’s
wiring ever melts down. To help you get the most from a plotter, Cunliffe
has illuminated the whole development of electronic navigation, from the
basic GPS fix, through split-screen plotters to radar and on-board PCs.
There are sections on waypoints, routes, fog and even tides. The result is a
stress-free navigational philosophy that appeals across to experienced
sailors and powerboaters considering taking on new electronics or upgrading
what they have. WHITE HANDHELD FLARES RECALLED IN THE UK
A Health and Safety Executive and Trading Standards investigation has been
launched in Great Britain following the serious injury of a Yachtmaster
Instructor who was demonstrating a white handheld flare. The 51 year old
married yachtsman suffered severe burns and broken bones to his hand and
arm. The Pains Wessex White Collision Warning (MK 7) Hand Flare is sold on
its own and is also contained as part of the Collision Warn-Off Kit and the
ORC RORC Distress Kit.
